YOUR BIGGEST FAN

Katori Shingo would never put it into words, especially with Nakai Masahiro and Kimura Takuya within hearing distance, but really, if Nakai-kun was SMAP’s self-proclaimed biggest fan; then, Shingo could proudly claim the title of being Nakai-kun and Kimura-kun’s self-proclaimed biggest fan.

His ears pricked, his hearing picking up the sound of a crying child over the hustle and bustle of people talking, laughing and tittering as they participated in the Marching J charity event. Smiling apologetically to the fans in front of him, Shingo took a small step back, allowing a junior to take over, as he scanned his surroundings looking for the source, concerned for the safety of the child. It was truly a miracle that he spotted the tiny figure, nearly lost in a sea of mulling people, unnoticed amidst the organized chaos, but before he could react, someone else beat him to it.

Shingo watched as Kimura-kun swooped in, scooping the crying child into his arms, gently rubbing comforting circles on his back and rocking him to soothe the child’s tears. Relieved that the child was in good hands, Shingo didn’t need to be near them to know of the gentle and concerned expression that adorned Kimura-kun’s features from the glimmer in his eyes to the touch of warmth and care that tugged at his lips. It was an expression that Shingo himself had received very often, awkward but so incredibly sincere when they were young, an expression that had taken on a mature, brotherly, almost fatherly edge when Kimura-kun had truly come into his own. He didn’t need to be within hearing distance to know that Kimura-kun was murmuring words of comfort and encouragement, promises of safety and security, his low baritone ever expressive with protectiveness and the desire to help. After all, that same voice had pierced through the terrifying silence that came upon the wake of failure and disaster, a voice which he himself had come to associate with cheer, energy and laughter even when the tides were bad.

Kimura-kun had always been their emotional support, the safety-net that kept them afloat when it seemed like they were drowning in pressure and expectations.

It wouldn’t be long before someone, other than Shingo, noticed Kimura-kun’s preoccupation, and just as the youngest member of SMAP predicted, it was Nakai-kun who was the first to approach them.

With the child’s face now buried in the curve of Kimura-kun’s neck, the two oldest of SMAP spoke to each other in low voices; Nakai-kun gesturing towards the child and Kimura-kun explaining the situation. It wasn’t long before they came to an agreement, and Nakai-kun led the way with Kimura-kun trailing behind him as they walked towards the stage. Shingo watched as Kimura-kun continued to care for the child, who appeared to be a lot more cheerful and less afraid, even giggling a little when Kimura-kun played with him, as Nakai-kun talked to a staff member to arrange for a monitor. It was done swiftly and efficiently, completely matter-of-a-fact, and it wasn’t long before the two oldest of SMAP was standing on stage, each one holding the hands of the child now standing between them, as they made the announcement. That was definitely the Nakai-kun that Shingo knew, the one who was adaptive, who would swiftly take control of any situation, professionally, efficiently, and complete with friendly authority; giving orders that Shingo complied to willingly because it was all done with a smile and with the intentions that he only wanted the best from them, for them.

Nakai-kun had always been their Leader, the one who took charge of the way things worked within the group, the one who spent hours, nights thinking of ways that they could improve individually and move forward together, leaving nobody trailing behind.

Yet, when Kimura-kun needed to take a break from being the emotional pillar, Nakai-kun would step in; similarly all smiles and laughter, positivity and cheer no matter how bad the circumstances were.

Yet, when Nakai-kun needed a break from being the Leader, Kimura-kun would take charge, equally strict and authoritative, with care that came from believing that they could do better, and from wanting them to be the best they could be, all without leaving a single one of them behind.

Watching as a grateful mother bowed and profusely thanked his two fellow members, who were beginning to get the deer-in-headlights look from her emotional shower of appreciation, Katori Shingo knew.

He was definitely the Nakai-kun and Kimura-kun’s self-proclaimed biggest fan.

And, he always would be.

A/N: Loosely inspired by the real event of someone spotting Kimura-san comforting a lost child, and 2TOP making the lost child announcement. <3
