A GOOD CAUSE

It was for a good cause.

Or at least, that was what Kimura Takuya told himself.

‘What in the world is this?!’

Having an idea of what Takuya had come upon, Masahiro Nakai looked up from his MC notes and snorted while the other SMAP members looked questioningly at each other.

All their questions were answered when Takuya walked in wearing a suit that looked like it could have come from one of their concerts, stark white with deep blue edges.

Inagaki Goro’s eyes widened, Katori Shingo’s jaw dropped and Kusanagi Tsuyoshi stared.

They had seen more outlandish outfits, even worn more outlandish ones. The suit that Takuya had on was mild in comparison, and it was something that the other SMAP members could see themselves wearing.

But, not at an official event like the donation collection.

‘It was designed to be like, you know, Paccho the Fire Bear [1], the image character of Tokyo Gas,’ explained Ogawa [2], ‘Something about raising awareness that we should be conserving fuel and electricity to help as well.’

Takuya really couldn’t help the one incredulous eyebrow that was threatening to disappear behind his fringe. The unspoken question of ‘Why couldn’t we just get the real thing?’ was painted on every part of his expressive features.

‘Maa maa, think of it as something you're doing for your fans. They would most definitely be able to see you much better in that,’ said Nakai, his tone nonchalant, mockingly teasing, his lips tightly pressed together in a superhuman effort to repress the laughter that was threatening to burst out of him. Ducking out of the room, he left a parting remark in his wake.

‘Besides, it would be good promotion. People would be able to see you from at least a hundred miles away. They would come in to donate simply because they would want to know, “What the heck is Kimura Takuya wearing?!” It's for a good cause really.’

Shingo, who was sipping from a warm cup of coffee, choked and sputtered at their Leader’s words, swiftly deciding to escape before he doubled over in laughter and brought Takuya’s wrath down upon himself.

‘Shingo, you are so dead,’ Takuya huffed as the youngest SMAP member’s sudden fit of hilarity filtered through to them, the door and walls nowhere near thick enough to block out his whooping laughter.

Realizing that it was a lost cause, and that it would really trouble the staff if he voiced up further, he deflated. After all, if it had been planned that he should resemble an image character, it was part of the job really, and he wasn’t about to protest; it was just unprofessional.

It did help placate him a little that Goro looked somewhat sympathetic at his fellow Member’s plight.

Then, Tsuyoshi decided to pipe up.

‘Besides, Kimura-kun looks good in it anyway, so why not?’

Takuya looked at the younger man like the he was insane. ‘It isn’t about looking good or not; it is about standing out when I shouldn’t be,’ he remarked, tugging absently at a blue-tinged sleeve, ‘This is a charity event for the earthquake and tsunami victims. The people who have suffered, the people who are coming to donate, they should be the stars of the event, not us, and most definitely, not me.’

And, with everyone else wearing blacks and browns, he would most certainly stand out.

‘But, Kimura-kun would stand out even if you wore a normal black outfit, so there wouldn’t be any difference.’

In the face of Tsuyoshi’s genuine bewilderment, Takuya simply could not hold on to the last, lingering vestiges of protest, his objections slipping through his fingers like sand.

It was truly amazing the kind of effect his fellow Members had on him.

His positive attitude coming to the forefront, he threw his hands up in amused defeat. If he had to wear it, the least he could do was enjoy it. After all, it wasn’t what he wore that mattered; it was the rare chance that they got to interact with their fans, and in one mind and spirit, combine their energies for a good cause.

‘Are you saying that the outfit I'm wearing isn't “normal”?’ Takuya asked, playfully threatening, as he advanced on Tsuyoshi, ‘And, what do you mean by “stand out even if I’m wearing black”? Are you trying to imply that I look weird?’

As the both of them ducked out of the room to await their turn onstage, joining a Shingo who looked slightly guilty and apologetic, if still a little mischievously amused, Takuya was hard-pressed to not laugh aloud at the wide-eyed stares he garnered from the people around him; their juniors who were trying their hardest not to overtly gawk at him because it would be impolite and the fans who seemed completely stunned at sight of him.

Well, Nakai had a point.

It would be worth it being a walking-talking promotion sign, a really random human personification of an image character, if it helped raise awareness.

And, if the random people that came in to donate had expressions as entertaining as the ones he had just received.

After all, it was for a good cause.

[1] Paccho the Fire Bear is the image character of Tokyo Gas. Here's how the real thing looks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1hml9azf1c

[2] Ogawa Ryo - Kimura Takuya's manager.

A/N: Inspired by Kimura-san's amazing outfit on the second day of Marching J. Really, I'm still ROFL-ing every time I see a picture. I guess this is my way of attempting to answer the question of why he was wearing something that was so entirely different from everyone else. xDDD
