Wow. That is a particular kind of FAIL on their part. Oh yeah, teens are totally never influenced by popular culture, ever! Nope, never. Of course, there are teens out there that won't be influenced by this series when they read it, but a lot will be, and it's something to worry about.

There were some librarians who said they actually discussed the topic with the teens in their library-- I think it helps to bring people's attention to it. The underlying assumptions can still latch on to your subconscious, but at least you known they're there. But just ignoring it because it's "only fiction"? I want to beat my head against a wall.

Why do they think a lot of librarians take pains to have a variety of protagonists and not much racially or otherwise charged language in books they recommend?

Did she get her women's studies degree from Oral Roberts University? Normalizing obsessive and stalking as 'romance' is not okay.

I don't know. But apparently she was told "you can't be feminist unless you're..." a lot there. I sort of want to ask why she didn't switch majors if she hated it that much.

And of course, the best way to respond to being silenced is to try to silence others and tell them they're crazy! Such logic!

I can't LL, because it's on the YALSA-bk e-list. It's one of the lists specifically for teen librarians or people interested in teen librarianship and who are members of the ALA. If I can stomach the fail later I'll QQ.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I haven't actually read the series yet. But there was a review that called the series a "How-to Manual for Abusive Relationships" and... things went from there.
