01 I’ve become kind of obsessed with searching out and studying lists compiling the best albums of 2005. Already. And there is still one entire month left. For the past several weeks I’ve been scrutinizing over mine to compact it to twenty albums while constantly stuffing my ears with new stuff I have to hear before the deadline ( Read more... )

Seek out and read articles by Beardley and Levinson, both of which have written about 'Negative Emotion and Music'. I took a Philosophy of the Arts course first semester freshman year, and one of my favorite topics was discussing why people love depressing music. I'm sure you've had people tell you that the music you enjoy is depressing, and yet you gain such great pleasure from it. It's a fascinating question.

AND! I'll get you critiques of the music you gave me *soon*, although I've already sought out the full albums of many of the artists, and have changed my opinions somewhat.

What I'd really like to do is catch you over winter break, have a cup of coffee, and talk about it in person.

Cheers.

Yes, I've pondered that idea of why I'm attracted to such downtrodden, "depressing" music -- especially when I'm definitely more of an optimistic guy. I'll search for those articles, definitely.

But I would love to sit down and talk to you about music or anything else when we're both home over break. I'll only be home for about 6 days or so, but you should give me a call on my phone sometime then and we'll get together. My number: 608.317.0581

i saw capote a little while ago and its definetely one of those films who have to think about. i liked it, but i feel like i need to see it again as well as read the book and maybe see the original film of in cold blood. capote is an interesting character.

in the bedroom i havent seen since it came out but thats another film i need to return to. i still remember it vividly though, especially when marisa tomei's character comes down the stairs and sees the fight between her husband and the boyfriend. its pretty powerful.

yeah, 'in the bedroom' was really unbelievable. what i really love about it is just how subtle everything is -- because of the tremendous acting in the film, very small actions and comments seem to take on heavy emotional weight. really remarkable. that's one i want to watch again already.

great to hear from you! yeah, you definitely described 'in the bedroom' very accurately. very similar to how it made me feel. it was one of those films that i've been meaning to see for awhile, and seeing it on your list reminded me of it. so, thank you!

yeah, when i respond to your email (!) i'll attach my essay about stars of the lid to it. seriously... their music is taking over my life.

more livejournals? hope you don't mind if i hunt that down and add you.

I know. Tired Sounds of... is incredible. I really love it. I cannot think of another piece of music that returns the same overwhelming wave of warmth as Tired Sounds, when given the right attention.

That livejournal is personal - no-one but me can read it. Oh, and it's in Danish anyway. Otherwise -- sure you could have added me.

And: Don't you know anything I've liked so far this year? You don't have any idea? My list is probably my hardest year-list to guess so far (for people who've tried to guess them over the last few years). At least last year, you knew I had Devendra, the Collective, Joanna, Wilco, Arcade Fire etc. Well -- that will just make it even more interesting to hear your guesses!

Ok, ok. I'm going to give this a shot. But this means that you have to guess 10 or so albums that you think are going to appear on my list too. Sound good?

Well, after thinking for awhile, here are my guess on what will be on your year end list:

Sigur Ros - Takk
Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness
Cocorosie - Noah’s Ark
The Skygreen Leopards - Life and Love in the Sparrow's Meadow
Désormais - Dead Letters to Lost Friends
Animal Collective & Vashti Bunyan - Prospect Hummer / Feels
Greg Davis & Sebastien Roux - Paquet Surprise
Brian McBride - When the Detail Lost its Freedom
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase

That was tough, because I could be WAY off, but I thought I'd at least venture a guess. Your turn!

By the way, if you haven't heard this album, I highly suggest you check it out. I think you'd really like it: "Yha Hamaraa" by Paavoharju.
