School discipline is becoming a major issue all over the country. Locally, FUSD suspends more students than the Los Angeles School District, which has ten times as many students (which is the same factor by which Fresno exceeds LA). Visalia suspended 22% of the student body per year (of couse, I have questions about that statistic).
What bothers some is how these suspensions are handled. Some students will get suspended and allowed to do their class work at home, some are denied homework as part of the punishment (which I see as just plain stupid). Some get five days of suspension for striking a teacher in the face, some are completely expelled for minor infractions. It's finally gotten to crisis stage, though, and FUSD is re-examining their policy. Thing is, I don't really think it's oming from inside the faculty, but rather from partent complaint.
