http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/05/09/D8HGAPTO9.htmlA high school student was suspended for five days after singing a spoof of "On Top of Ol' Smokey" that includes lyrics about shooting a teacher.

The song includes the lyrics: "On top of Ol' Smokey, all covered with blood, I shot my poor teacher with a .44 slug."
Administrators pulled Cox out of class later Friday and asked why she had threatened her teacher. She was suspended Monday.

Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for the school district, about 30 miles northeast of Atlanta, said the suspension was "appropriate disciplinary action" for disrupting class.
http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0506/326257.htmlSloan Roach, spokeswoman for Gwinnett County schools located about 30 miles northeast of Atlanta, disputed Cox's version of events. Roach said the student was discussing a grade with her teacher when she began singing the song out loud in class.

The family plans to meet with their attorney today to discuss possible legal proceedings. They thought it was unfair for the teacher to report her, and school administrators to make her transfer to North Gwinnett at the beginning of her senior year.
Her mother also said she was worried the suspension would affect Beth Anne’s academic record because it coincides with her final exams and papers.
“This might affect her HOPE Scholarship. This might affect her being admitted to any college. This is disrupting my daughter’s life way too much,” Suzanne Cox said.
The school system declined to comment further on the situation because no official legal action has been taken.
FIVE DAYS is appropriate for "disrupting class"? I'm sorry. What do they do with a real class disruption? Shoot them?
Has all sanity left the educational system in this country? As one of the blogs mentioned says, if we suspended students like that for all the stupid stuff they do, they'd be OUT of school more than they'd be IN school. Maybe that's what the administrators want?
Not that singing in the classroom is acceptable (except for choir, maybe), but sheesh. 5 days for telling another student the words to a song?
Now, why do I believe the girl's story and not the teacher's?
