It's spam day! Apparently.

I said "f***" and "sh**" in class today. Some students said they heard those words a lot in movies and they wanted to know how to use them, so we talked about register and understanding appropriate and inappropriate times for certain language. But other students didn't know the words we were talking about, and

You rock hardcore, Miss Rusty. I love that you're not afraid to jump in and address questions that your students have, regardless of the blush factor.

This particular class is pretty sharp, so they've asked perceptive questions about other vocabulary and phrases, for example things that can or can't be used with the opposite sex. Like, you may hear it all the time in rap and pop music, but is it really okay for a young man to call a young woman "baby"? I like this class, even if we're often off track and probably won't finish both textbooks. :)

It was! Interestingly, I also ended up explaining the MPAA rating system to both my classes today, for different reasons.

First of all, your icon is hysterical. Secondly, it's so great that you take the time to teach your kids things that they will need to know in the real world but won't find in a textbook. Even if those things do make you blush.

:) That's the great thing about ESL as opposed to EFL (teaching English as a foreign language, like teaching English classes in Japan for instance) - the students are hearing and using the language every day, so there's a sense of urgency and, in relative terms, a lot of real world experience.
