Russ's 2009 Movie Top 10 List

By some cruel twist of fate, I'm still not being paid to ramble on about my opinions of film, so you shall all continue to benefit for free. I've seen six movies this weekend, which I feel like puts me in a good place to rank the best movies of the year, as I feel that what I've got left to see probably won't rank

I love your reviews. I only saw 2 new movies last year.. Up and Star Trek. How come Star Trek isn't getting accolades? I am pretty ignorant about awards.

I think initially people thought Star Trek would be potentially up for a best picture oscar. When it was announced that there would be ten best picture nominees instead of five, it was often said that Star Trek was "the type of film" that would benefit. I don't think Star Trek could ever be in the top five. When you compare something like Star Trek to the Lord of the Rings movies, I think you can see a clear distinction in quality. I think it's fair to say, however, that Star Trek is a more well rounded movie than Avatar. I also think it's fair to say that in the ten nominees, it was going to be Star Trek or Avatar, and not both. Very clearly, it was going to be Avatar. Star Trek was the dark horse.
