Long busy fun day - but what's with the lack of costumes?

Okay, I think I've mentioned that this town hardly ever has trick-or-treating on Halloween. They won't do it on Fridays because some kid got killed by a car driven by a person coming home from a football game. They won't have it on a Sunday because this is the Bible Belt (and I suspect the same would be true for a Wednesday, same reason.) So the ( Read more... )

No costumes sucks. As does your City Council for doing their best to make Halloween a non-event.

I'm wondering if the lack of costumes was related to the Bible Belt mentality - dressing up in a costume might be vaguely Satanic participation in an evil ritual(horrors!), but begging for candy on a regular day is fine.

Whatever floats their boat, I guess, but it sucks that anyone with an inclination to really enjoy the holiday is discouraged from doing so.

The usual explanation for the wandering date is the kid that got killed. This was decades ago, mind you, as near as I can tell, and other towns have had kids get killed on Halloween, but that's the excuse. Trick-or-treat is still very much allowed, and certain areas are swamped on Trick-or-Treat day.

*snort* Those kids? Nah. Young, black, dressed like every other young black kid in town... the Bible-thumpers' kids tend to be better dressed, better behaved (not that these kids were RUDE, just more casual) and otherwise held to higher standards than these kids were. And their mamas were DEFINITELY not in the Bible-thumper categories either, way too much skin showing for that.

We have a (definitely conservative) Christian school here in town. They let the kids dress up, they just limited it to superheroes and/or Biblical figures. Nice wholesome characters, in other words, no disreputable ones like witches and such. ;)

Well, with little kids that isn't always an option. But adults and the older kids certainly could. (Heck, I could have if I'd wanted. But I didn't.)

WTF? A lot of kids will trick or treat Saturday here because of Sunday being a school night, but why do it Thursday? That is just weird.

Sunday is out because it's a school night and it's the Bible Belt. Saturday - I've never figured out what they have against Saturday for trick-or-treat. Friday night was when the kid got run over while trick-or-treating by somebody driving home from a home game. Which takes us to Thursday... which is also a school night, so why that's okay just doesn't make sense.

Yeah, tell me about it. I still think that Saturday would be the perfect day to trick-or-treat: no school to disrupt if the kid wants to wear their costume all day, no school the next day... whatever. I have given up on trying to figure out why they do these things here.
