Runo Knows...The Joy of Mixology

Jan 04, 2008 15:51

If you're planning on working at a bar, owning a bar, going to a bar, drinking at a bar, setting up a bar in your house, serving people from said bar, making drinks for yourself, or thinking about mixed drinks in any way, shape, or form, go out right now and buy this book.

Really, honestly, I'm not certain what else to say.  This is a great book for any mixologist, bartender, concoctioneer, bar chef, or whatever the #%) you want to call yourself.

Written by Gary Regan, and illustrated using tons of examples from his career, it's more than just a list of recipes.  Regan goes over history, over techniques, over ingredients, and over (yes) recipes, including recipes for things such as bitters.

Additionally, he not only just gives you a ton of recipes, with notes on each about changes to them, history, and even how it should taste, but he also gives what I found incredibly useful: chart after chart of how drinks are related to each other, following a chapter dividing a lot of drink recipes into families.

Why is that so useful?

An illustration from Christmas time: Mom loves Cosmos.  Dad went to buy more triple sec and mistakenly bought peach schnapps.  I looked in the book, and shortly mom was drinking either woo-woos or sex on the beaches and almost as happy as she would've been with Cosmos.

It's a solid book and very well written - even the recipes are a joy to read.

I seriously cannot recommend it highly enough.

BUY IT!
