I thought I'd follow up just to say: it's not really a completely "devastating" effect that Prohibition had, other than unemploying a number of bartenders and burning people out on drinks like the Bronx.
But it's more how it wiped out reserves of whiskey which, coupled with world war 2, led to changes in how people drank, and then when vodka hit...
