A time to remember

Apr 10, 2008 12:20

The air is crisp without being cold, the sun is bright without being hot, and the grass is greener than it ever was back home. But somehow... somehow this seems like the perfect place to remember papa. The perfect place to love his memory and let it go ( Read more... )

Rapunzel stands by the tree they've planted in honor of Makita's father, remembering her own losses with a sort of distant ache that only time can dull. She hopes that Makita's grief will lose it's sharper edges soon, and be able to remember him without the stabbing pain in her heart that she knows all too well.

Makita is, even at this time and place, aware of her surroundings. She glances up and over at Rapunzel with wide eyes.

Rapunzel walks over and wordlessly gives the girl a hug. It's not much, but she knows that nothing she does or says will make things any easier.

The shift which has Makita leaning into that hug is almost imperceptible, but it's there.

There's another blonde Fable in attendance, this one answering to the name Goldilocks. Bearing herself with appropriate levels of respect and sobriety, she's standing a little distance away from her kinswoman, not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable. She's here for Makita, and doesn't intend to make any trouble, verbal or otherwise.

Makita glances over at Goldie long enough to give a nod of acknowledgment. Gratitude, appreciation, recognition... there's a lot you can pack into a nod.

Mel doesn't dress for funerals. She doesn't dress for anything except breaking-and-enterring. But sometimes she holds herself like a soldier, and on those times it's usually a soldier who has seen loss.

She also presumes to stand right next to Makita, a hand on her shoulder.

Makita's hand rests lightly on Mel's. For now that's enough.

And hopefully it'll be enough tomorrow as well. And the day after, and...

Mel's fingers tighten slightly and relax. This is the worst thing ever in the world, and she knows it.

An almost imperceptible amount of tension leaves Makita's body at the squeeze. It's not much, but it's there.

Rachel was there. She'd come drifting over from her spot on the lake to lay flame licked fingers on the tree. It'd grow well in Milliways, strong and touched by the same magic as the place it grew in...

Her other hand she held out to Makita.

Rachel's hand is always welcome, and Makita reaches out to brush her fingers across the too-warm skin of it. She manages a tiny, pained, grateful smile.

::Come here:: Rachel sighed across the girl's mind, capturing her fingers and tugging her gently. ::This is a memorial...the tree should know of your father::

Makita is silent, even in her mind, but at Rachel's words images flash through her mind. Her father in all the ways she'd known him: smiling, laughing, stern, kind, dangerous...

Alex is in his black suit. It's not something he likes to wear. But it's what you wear on such occasions. He looks around to see the friends that Kita has made. He looks at Kita, the weight of the world on her young shoulders.

He finds Rapunzel and wordlessly takes her hand.

As much as he wishes this didn't have to be, it seems like it's the right thing to do.

She squeezes his hand, and leans into him a little. It's a somber occasion, and she is glad to see Makita's friends come out to support her. (Even Goldilocks.)

"I hope this does her some good."

Her words are quiet, and meant only for Alex's ears.

"She said that there wasn't really time for grief and saying goodbye in Bahumut."

"No, there wouldn't be. Not in that hell." He remembers (yet again) that one afternoon spent there. He feels the long-since-lost bullet graze him again.

"But here...there's always time enough." He wonders if Kita can see that, though.

"We can hope, and be here for her. Sometimes grief is a very private thing, and sometimes you just need others to know what you've lost and missing."

She observes Makita with no small amount of empathy.

"Sometimes when just one person is missing, the whole world becomes a smaller, darker place."
