Having looked up John Cassaday on scans_daily, I agree that I like his work a lot. I'd need to read stuff by him before he gets an emotional response, but his art is a selling point, that's for sure.
Scott Beatty! He's another writer I like lots and lots, but I don't feel like I've read enough to declare him one of my favorite. Maybe because I've never read him writing an on-going except for his run on Gotham Knights. Winick will always have my "OLLIE <333333333" and "JAAAAYYYYYYY-SOOOOOOOOOOOON" on his side, I think.
I'd recommend reading Planetary to get a feel for Cassaday. The writing is superb, too - Warren Ellis at his best, when the cynicism doesn't totally eclipse the sense of wonder, he has original characters to play with, and a setting he can get nicely meta in...
Ellis is probably my single favorite comics writer, but I loathe his runs on conventional superhero comics - he's far superior with original characters. When he wrote X-men, I had to take it off my pull list because of how off and out of character everyone's dialogue was.

Writing-wise, I'd put Scott Beatty ahead of Winick, but otherwise I agree completely.
