However slowly she edged her way down them, the stairs still creaked beneath Lyssa’s weight. She paused, turning a nervous glance back to the door at the top. Contented snores echoed through the twilight. Lyssa smiled and shook her head. It never ceased to amaze her that such a tiny girl could make such a racket with just her breath.
She turned back to the stairway and the tall blonde form now anxiously waiting for her at the bottom. Ski’s questioning look was met with a scowl and arms folded across her chest as Lyssa guessed at what her sister was thinking.
“How long has she been asking?”
Ski heaved a sigh. “It is a relatively recent development,” she said, as they both settled on the steps.
“And?”
“And what?” said Ski.
“And what have you told her?”
Ski was looking anywhere but in her eyes. “I haven’t.”
Lyssa buried her face in her hand and sighed. She looked at her sister and shook her head, trying to compose herself before she spoke. The girl didn’t need a shouting match outside her door while she was trying to sleep. “What,” she said at last, “would you have me tell her?”
Ski stared at her hands as they wound together in her lap. “I don’t know,” she said.
Another head shake as she tried to keep her tone even. “You knew this was coming.”
“I had not expected it so soon.” She looked up, her hands still kneading each other, and forced a smile. “Just be glad we left Mother’s or she would have fed her all sorts of crazy notions by now.”
“Maybe Mother has the right idea,” Lyssa said, pushing herself to her feet.
“What?” Lyssa didn’t need so much as a glance to know the open-mouthed look of disbelief that was aimed at her.
Lyssa shrugged. “Next time she asks, I’ll tell her I don’t know.”
