Word of the Day : Sallow - having a sickly, yellowish color
So I went a little off topic... but it was still inspired by the word - had to be Shasa. Anyway, this is just after Rune & Lyssa bring Kairn & Shasa back to the fort.
Lyssa wrinkled her nose at the steaming mug Rune thrust into her grasp. “What is this stuff?”
“Tea,” Rune shot over his shoulder, already turned back to the stove. “What’s it look like?”
Lyssa grimaced. “Not the look of it I was concerned with,” she said.
“It should help the swelling,” he said, a handful of vegetables landing in the pot with a soft splash.
She peered through the door at the pair seated on the couch, the tiny girl sinking into the cushions under the weight of her oversized belly, her legs draped across the lap of the man seated beside her. Both looked pale and sickly, with dark rings hung beneath eyes that darted fearfully about the room. “What swelling?” she said. “She’s emaciated.”
“Yeah, working on that too,” said Rune, jabbing a wooden spoon into the pot. “Just take her the tea already.”
Lyssa turned to do as she was told when Tess came hurrying into the room. She brushed past them to grab her cloak from its peg. “Where are you headed?” said Lyssa, as the other shrugged into the sleeves.
“Back to town,” said Tess. “We’ll be in need of a midwife.”
Lyssa frowned at Rune. “Can’t you?”
“Ski’s idea,” said Tess, tying off her cloak.
Lyssa opened her mouth to protest, but Rune’s hand settled on her shoulder. “I’ve only helped with a baby once or twice, Lyss, and a long time ago. She‘s too sick and this is too important.”
Lyssa snorted. “So you’re buying this crap about the baby then?” She found herself the target of a pair of angry glares.
“The necromancers clearly want them for some reason,” said Rune, back to stirring the pot.
“You’ve seen everything we have,” said Tess. “What makes this any harder to believe?”
Lyssa shrugged, the hot liquid sloshing about in the mug. “I don’t know,” she said. “It’s all just a little too convenient.”
Rune’s shoulders shook and he turned back to her with a grin. “These are the gods we’re talking about, Lyss.”
“Right,” she said, scowling back at him as she headed for the doorway. “If they want this kid so bad, why don’t they take better care of her.” She strode out of the room without waiting for a response, a smile hastily plastered across her face as she approached the weary pair.
