“No, no, no!” Mara’s voice pierced the air like only a small child’s can. Wet dish and cloth in hand, Ski peered out the kitchen window.
The six year old was perched in the low boughs of the sycamore, a green blanket tied around her small shoulders and a wooden sword in her grip. “You can’t climb trees,” she said, emphasizing her words with wild swings of the crude weapon.
The target of her ire, a girl from town of about the same age, swung free of the lowest branch and landed in the grass. “Don’t see why not,” she said.
Mara threw her head back with a toss of her ruddy golden curls, a gesture that never ceased to remind Ski of Lyssa. She set the plate on the counter with a smile at the thought that Lyssa might give her just the same look if she were ever to tell her so, and pulled another from the soapy basin.
“You,” said Mara to the other, “don’t have hands. You’re a demon, remember?”
The girl gave the base of the tree a prod with her foot. “Lotsa things climb trees that don’t have hands.” The sword still in her hand, Mara put her hands on her hips. “Squirrels,” she continued. “Possums.”
“You’re not a squirrel,” said Mara. “You’re a demon. And the rules are, demons can’t climb trees.”
The second plate came to rest atop the first with a clink. Ski shook her head and smiled as she reached for another. “Well, who said you get to make all the rules?” said the girl, her own arms now folded sternly across her chest.
Mara gave her head another, much exasperated, thrust. “Because I know about these things.” Ski chuckled to herself, vivid pictures of more than a few skeletal beasts in trees coming to mind. “It’s just the way it works. Demons don’t climb trees. Now are we going to play or not?”
“I guess.”
“Good.” said Mara, smiling again as she raised her sword.
“So, when do I get to be the knight?”
“Maybe next time.”
