I know this is a horrible tease, but I was really torn as to what happens next, it's a major plot issue I'm still trying to decide.

Lyssa eyed the temple top to bottom, arms crossed and glowering. “What are you doing here?” she muttered, earning herself a sidelong glance from the boy.

“What is who doing where?” said Shamino, cocking his head to squint at the building before them as he picked his way through the brush.

Lyssa shook her head. “It always has its reasons,” she said, unfolding her arms and taking a step towards it. “Come.”

Still frowning at her as if she were speaking an unknown language, Shamino nonetheless trotted after her as she made her way to the heavy doors at the temple’s front. She gave a door a shove and it swung in with a soft creak.

Shamino gasped as he took the door from her, pausing on the threshold of the blackened room. “What…what happened here?” he called in a whisper amidst the slap of her boots on the charred floorboards.

“Never been sure,” she said, drawing to a halt before the central altar. She fixed the statue’s lifeless sockets with a sharp glare, as if she might intimidate an answer from the stone.

No one was dying. No one was even bleeding.

“Lyssa…?“

Hell, they hadn’t even been lost. There was no good reason-

“Lyssa!”

She spun around. His hand still on the open door, the boy was no more than a couple of paces into the room. Eyes wide and his whole body shaking, he stared at her, through her. She whipped her head to spy the altars of fire and water, cold and empty, over her shoulder, and back again.

“I…It’s…” A hint of blue crept over trembling lips.

“You’re not having a fit, are you?“ A few swift paces closed the distance between them.

“Hot,” he said, glistening beads multiplying across his brow.

Lyssa reached out a hand to his shoulder, and glassy eyed, he pitched into her arms.
