One foot after the other, Shamino tumbled and stumbled, staggering, rolling and racing, headlong through the crowd. Heart throbbing, lungs straining, boots pounding the cobbles, he whipped past building after building, the red and blue of fluttering awnings sailing by in a blur.
The thundering cries long shed, the streets turned dark and twisted and the cold, looming facades unfamiliar, he threw his back to a wall, breathed deep, and waited for the world to stop spinning before him. Chest heaving, legs shaking, he fished the bundle from the depths of his pocket and counted the coins with a grin.
