My life has always been a balancing act-weighing Ethan's interests against Simon's, adding in Rory's and the parents' and all on top of my own. My brothers needed me to balance them all. That was what I did.
When I left for seminary, I thought, I've done enough balancing. They'll all be okay. I sent them emails, managing little long-distance disputes. At first, it was fine. Then our cousin Becca disappeared.
Simon and Ethan started projecting it all onto each other. Rory started misjudging his own maturity. My parents fretted. They all needed me back home.
So home I went.
