Summary: A present reinforces Jessie’s determination.
Notes: For Olympics Day 2 for my team. Jessie runs away from home shortly after her 16th birthday.
Jessie stepped into the drawing room, smoothing down her skirt. “You called, Mother?”
“Ah, Jessica, good. Come here.”
The almost sixteen-year-old stepped forward, quashing the urge to fidget out of habit.
“Now that you finally seem to be accepting that you’re a young lady, I believe it is time I passed this to you.” Her mother stood, and motioned her to turn.
Jessie did and felt the weight of the necklace settle around her neck. She looked down, and then carefully touched the inch diameter jewel.
“This has been passed through five generations of Lillan women. You’re the sixth. This is a statement.” Her mother spun her around and smiled. “The young men will find you irresistible.”
It took a great force of will not to at least roll her eyes at that. “Thank you,” she murmured, for lack of better thing to say.
“Chin up,” her mother snapped. “You must wear the jewelry like it is a part of you. You pay it no mind."
“Yes, Mother,” Jessie said and then breathed a silent sigh of relief as one of the maids appeared in the door.
“Mrs. Rider, you have a visitor.”
“Ah, good, yes, send them in! Jessica, I will see you at dinner.”
“Yes, Mother,” Jessie said, glad for the dismissal. She turned and hastened through the house to her room. She stepped to the mirror and ran her fingers over the stone. She would not be a prize men five years her elder would fight over. No, it was time to plan her departure.
