"Mom! Look at that one!" Phoenix exclaimed in awe, looking in the window at the dazzling red mermaid styled prom dress. Carrie smiled at her daughter's excitement and said, "It's gorgeous, Firebird. Is that what you would wear to prom?" Phoenix frowned. "Prom?" Carrie nodded. "What's that, Mom?" Carrie smiled and said, "It's the biggest dance in high school. You go to it right before you graduate and it's like one more big party in which you get to hang out with all your friends before you go away. It's a pretty big thing."
Phoenix listened, with a half smile on her face. "Did you go to prom, Mom?" Carrie nodded. "Yes, ma'am."
"With Dad?"
Carrie gave a light chuckle. "No, I met your dad way later after high school. No, I went with the baseball team captain. He was an all right guy, I guess."
"So, I'll be able to go to prom too?" Phoenix asked, looking back at the dress she liked. "Yes. If you want to, sweetheart. Who knows? You might even become prom queen."
Phoenix liked the sound of that very much. Carrie held out her hand. "Come on, let's go to the next store.
