The house was too big. Normally Colin wouldn't have minded, but now it was intolerable. They were bloody mocking him.
He took off his hat and coat-both black, for mourning-and put them into the too-big closet and then went into the too-big living room and sat down on the too-big couch. A house built for three, he thought with a sigh. But there's only one of us now.
Some housing official had hung a plaque on the wall that read “He who transplanted sustains”-the motto of East Essex County.
He knew it was a lie.
