Pumpkin Pie #14. Costume and Blueberry Yogurt #27. A Misunderstanding
Story : There Are No Small Parts
Rating : G
Word Count : 464

My cast from my '09 failed nano, transplanted into a new world and a new canon. This takes place in the same world as Misadventures (note: Rory, who will be showing up later, is NOT the same character as in Misadventures, though they developed from the same origin).

The story centers around the cast and crew of a theatre, and beyond that I'll just let them speak for themselves.

Fran’s standing in the costume shop, looking in bewilderment over the top of the ever growing pile of garments laid across her outstretched arms when, as often seems to be the case, the worst possible thing she could say just falls out of her mouth.

“So I’m your replacement, then?”

“My what?” The other woman - Gilda, she reminds herself, and she’s rather proud of the fact that she remembers at all; she’s been thinking she ought to start taking notes - stops short, the yellow robe she’d been about to add to Fran’s load still dangling from her hands.

“I-I’m sorry,” Fran stammers, warmth flooding her cheeks until they’re nearly as pink as her hair. “On the stage, I mean. I don’t think anyone could replace you here,” the words keep tumbling on as she bobs the stack of clothes in front of her, hoping to draw attention back to them. “These are beautiful, you know. I mean, the craftsmanship and all, I’d think you were part elf or something. Are you sure you’re not- I didn’t mean that!” she hastily amends as Gilda gives her another incredulous look.

And then she’s shaking her head. It’s something Fran’s noticed people do a lot of around her, once they’ve hit the point where they realize she’s harmless or stupid or something like that, she’s never quite been able to decide.

“Thank you,” she says, with a tone that’s more about ending this line of conversation than gratitude. She’s neatly folding the robe, and Fran has her arms ready as it descends towards the pile. “I was only in the one show, you know.”

“I hear you were good though,” says Fran, scurrying after Gilda as she heads back to the racks.

She’s got her head in a row of dresses and she tries to hide it, but Fran catches the bit of a laugh before it’s swallowed, and she wonders if there is a right thing to say to the woman at all.

When Gilda emerges from the rack, slipping a slinky slip of a green dress from its hanger, she’s smiling. “Who on earth told you that?”

Fran purses her lips for a moment before answering, wondering what sort of reaction she’s likely to receive. “Florian?”

This time she doesn’t try to cover her laugh, and Fran decides it’s a good thing. “Honey, I don’t think Flo has ever said a bad word about anyone in his life.”

“Oh.”

“You don’t have anything to worry about,” says Gilda, as the green dress joins the heap, and Fran feels a little better. “Not from me anyway,” she adds, and that really doesn’t help. “Now, go try these on.” And with that, she’s waving her towards the dressing screen and there’s no more room to say anything.
