Summary: "Hey, Nate," she said, apparently no more concerned for his personal space now than she had been a week ago.
12.43 a.m.
30th July 2011.
London, England.
There was too much bass in the music and it was making Nathan's ears throb. He grabbed his drink from the bartender, handing her his cash and glanced around as he waited for change.
Two of the three guys who had dragged him out tonight, Pete and Josh, were standing off to his right, pints in hand. They seemed to be laughing at someone - Luke probably, Nathan figured; he had mentioned something about a fit girl before they'd left the dance floor.
Nathan took his change from the pretty bartender and walked over to them, nudging Josh with his shoulder. "What's so funny?" he asked, shouting to be heard over the music.
"Luke's getting his ass handed to him man, that girl is so not interested."
He pointed and when Nathan's gaze moved past his other friend, he felt his heart stop completely.
The girl looked up then and her face broke into a grin.
She darted around Luke, ignoring his baffled protests and Nathan shook his head. How could she be here? How could she know where he lived, where he-
"Hey, Nate," she said, apparently no more concerned for his personal space now than she had been a week ago. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught Pete and Josh exchanging confused glances. He hadn't told them the specifics of what had happened in Paris, of course - just that a building had blown up close to where he'd been staying and he'd decided to come back early. Really early.
He'd never mentioned her, had written her off as some crazy part of his imagination being triggered by the events of that day.
He couldn't deny it here though, could he? Deny she was real when she was looking up at him like that and they could all see her-
"What's wrong?" she asked, mouth twisting into a pretty pout. "You still don't know me, do you?"
Nathan shook his head. "No."
The girl bit her lip and glanced over her shoulder to where Luke was standing, open-mouthed. "That means they don't know me either, huh?"
"No," Nathan repeated.
She sighed and when he looked again, he noticed a devious look in her eyes. "Oh well," she said, before she leaned up on her tiptoes and kissed him soundly on the mouth.
It was hot and lush and familiar and even though half of Nathan's mind was screaming at him, telling him that this would lead to nothing but trouble, it was pushed aside by the other half that made him kiss her back, made him tighten one hand on her hip.
She pulled back and looked up at him. Her smile was a little loose and with a start, he realised she'd been drinking too and that maybe this was all a coincidence.
"Sorry about that," she murmured, not moving back, not moving any further from him. "You - Heh. You literally have no idea what you do to me."
Nathan frowned. He was sure he hadn't been this confused back in Paris - and that was saying something. When she stepped back, he shook his head.
"Wait, I- What's your name?"
"Frankie," she said, like it was the easiest thing in the world - and if it was, why couldn't she have just said to begin with?! "I'll see you around, Nate. Take care of yourself."
She waved, a gentle curl of her fingers and then left, disappearing into the crowd. Nathan stood for a moment, staring after her, before he was interrupted by his friends. They were pleased for him, glad he'd found some other girl - and when had he managed that? - and she already seemed a thousand times better than Janine-
And Nathan nodded in all the right places, but he wasn't really listening.
The girl - Frankie - she was real.
That didn't bode well.
