He never felt anything in particular for Fatimah.
She was quite pretty, and very sweet, and apparently quite devoted to him, but.... but she was such a child, and he felt so much older. There was simply nothing there. He stayed awake nights, dug down deep in his soul, and came up with nothing but a vague and absentminded sort of fondness. That fondness could, he supposed, become affection in time, but still, affection wasn't love.
It was a shame, since they were to be married, but one couldn't force what wouldn't come.
Ah, well. No one could have everything.

Arelie is a gift.
He can think of no other way to describe her. Her beauty, her grace, her strength, her intelligence and her wisdom and her sheer lovely presence... he is awed by her, grateful for every moment she lets him spend with her. He'd throw his whole life away to be with her. In fact, he intends to.
She is the woman he should have married. She is the woman he will marry, as soon as he is able.
If he thinks of Fatimah at all in these bright, heady, joyful days, it is only as an obstacle.

He will dream of Arelie until the day he dies, but he will come to appreciate Fatimah more, too. She will be stronger, after, in a way she never was before; stronger, but harder too. There was never any love between them, and after the illusions are stripped away their relationship will be stronger.
Not kinder. Not loving. But stronger.
He will miss Arelie forever, an aching pain in his heart. But in a strange way, he will miss the innocent love in Fatimah's eyes more.
He will know that he killed it.
He won't know if he is sorry.
