Summary: Faith and Chloe decide to skip school.

The bad thing about being one of five siblings, in Faith’s opinion, was the fact that if one of them had early morning detention all of them would have to wake up early and go to school. Considering that this was one of the rare times that Faith herself wasn’t the one serving time under the watchful eye of one of the guidance counselors, she thought she had good reason to be peeved. At least the others had something to do. Grace went to the library, Altar went to detention, Chastity muttered something about the gym (Faith hoped she was going to smoke under the bleachers, and not try and mack on some senior jock. She didn’t feel like getting in a fight today), and Penn, the lucky graduated last year bastard who drove them, went back home to sleep. As for Faith... The cafeteria didn’t open for half an hour, the music room didn’t open to all students for another hour and a goddamn half, and there was nowhere else on campus that remotely interested her until school hours began.

With nothing better to do, she roamed the halls. It ended up being the best thing she could do, considering how many teachers weren’t there to tell her not to run in the halls, or leave scuff marks on the floor, or bang against the lockers. And then on the third floor, she turned a corner and nearly tripped over Chloe, and the day got even better.

“Jesus fucksticks, Cherry!” Stumbling to a halt, Faith had to quickly grab the edge of the wall to keep from falling onto Chloe completely. “Put a sign up to warn people on your left, next time. The next person that trips over you won’t be as pretty as I am.”

Chloe didn’t answer.

After a moment, Faith sighed, and reached down to pull one of the headphones out of Chloe’s ears. “Boo.”

Chloe jumped, whipping around to look at Faith. “Christ! When did you get there?”

“What are the fuck are you listening to, to where you didn’t hear me just bang around for two entire floors?”

“New music homework. Got it before I left the house this morning. Wanna listen?”

“School homework, or your weird homeschooling that’s supposed to help expand your musical horizons?”

“Weird homeschooling.”

“Sure. Move over.” Settling down next to Chloe, Faith stuck out a fist. “Rock Paper Scissors for who has to use the chewed up by the cat, but still work decently enough to listen to pair of earbuds in my pocket for the rest of the day?”

“...All right, I’ll take that,” Chloe answered after a moment, bumping her own fist against Faith’s. “One, two, three, go!”

“Ha! Scissors beat paper.” Grinning smugly, Faith dug the earbuds out of her pocket and tossed them into Chloe’s lap. “Enjoy. Now gimme.”

“Yeah, yeah...” Chloe rolled her eyes with a smile, switching out the earbuds hooked into her phone. “Seriously, though, you should listen to this. It’s pretty good.”

“Getting to it. Impatient.” Faith shoved the newly traded merchandise into her pocket, picking the most chewed earbud to listen out of while Chloe found the song she wanted. “So, what band are we listening to this week, and who assigned it?”

“It’s Aunt Sarah’s turn this week,“ Chloe answered.

“Awesome, I love Sarah’s taste in music.”

“And it’s a male artist. Usher Raymond the Fourth, aka Usher,” Chloe finished, waving a hand to shush Faith. “R&B-slash-hip hop-slash-dance. He’s pretty good. I like the beats he uses.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, until Faith spoke again. “Okay, so. Good music, we know that so far. What else is Sarah going to have you work on?”

“She wants me to watch a few of the music videos, and live performances, and study his dancing. And look into acts he did with other artists. Apparently, he mentored Justin Bieber?”

“Who’s Justin Bieber?”

“I asked Aunt Sarah that, and she said he was some kid from Canada that thirteen year olds went nuts over for a few years.”

“Ewww. Canada.”

“That’s what I said.”

“So, why are you here so early? I’m here because of my dumbass little brother, but you don’t have my mom.”

“Daddy had work early, and if I waited for when Daddy went to work, I would have missed my first few classes.”

“You turned down skipping half of a school day? And you call yourself my friend.”

“Oh, please,” Chloe scoffed, wrinkling her nose. “Like Daddy would have let me anyway.”

“Wanna skip?” Faith asked, before continuing in her most persuasive voice. “We’re here before most of the teachers, and it’s not school hours... And if anyone asks, we can say we’re going to for coffee.”

“Faith, I can’t skip without a good reason. What if any of my teachers go over anything important?”

“What if you get out of seven hours of completely boring crap? Look, if you want a reason.” Faith pulled a lighter out from under her wrist band. “I can light the school on fire.”

“Faith Huxley, don’t you even--“

“Good Christ, Cherry. I’m only joking,” She exclaimed, holding her hands up in surrender and letting the lighter drop into her lap. “Lighter going away now. Jesus.”

“Well, you can’t blame me for thinking you might be serious. It’s you.” Chloe frowned, wrapping the earbuds around her phone before tucking it away in her purse. “Besides, what are we supposed to do when school is over and it’s time to go home? Just come back and leave with everyone to go to my house?”

“...Yeah.”

“Oh. Well... Fine. It’s not like I have any important classes today.”

“Fucking excellent,” Faith laughed, hopping to her feet and pulling Chloe up with her. “C’mon. I know this great coffee place nearby, then we can go see a movie or something. Ticket prices are super cheap early in the morning...”
