The maple tree trunk was sturdy and strong against Shane's back as he played lightly in the night. The sounds of laughter and light bluegrass music filled his ears in the background. While it was great fun playing music for them, dancing get-togethers weren't really his thing. He was more a quiet loner, he figured to himself. He loved just playing to nothing in general and if anything, the sky and the stars were his best audience.
Shane sighed, moving the toothpick around in his mouth as he felt his mind drifting; bringing him constantly back to one person...Holly. He remembered how beautiful her smile was as she danced from partner to partner. How her skirt flowed around her black tie up boots. She had awed Shane from the moment she came out of her bedroom and the feeling never left.
He heard a laugh suddenly and in the next moment, Holly swung around the tree, hugging the tree trunk with her arms. Her eyes gleamed with an unique glow and Shane couldn't hold back his smirk as he stated, "Holly McCade...Why, I do believe you're drunk, madam." He tipped up his hat a bit as he awaited her explanation. Holly giggled, then stumbled over one of the roots of the tree, much to Shane's entertainment. "No! Shane, I'm not drunk. I'm just-" She swallowed hard as if trying to find the new words she wanted to say. "-I'm just a little giddy from the beers I had." Shane felt his smirk grow to a full grin. Holly situated her white peasant top and then said, "I was looking for you for a while now." Shane motioned to the area of trunk next to him. "Well, here I am. Come over here and sit a spell. See if we can get some that beer out of your system." Holly came over-well, more like stumbled over-settling down on a root next to the tall man she knew so well and for a moment, they both were silent, just staring at the stars that the sun was finally allowing to be seen in the sky.
Holly took a deep breath, feeling her dizzy head starting to clear a bit and she turned her head hearing the deep dulcet strums of the guitar strings that Shane nonchalantly played. "So, how come you weren't inside with all of us?" Holly asked, curious. Shane shrugged. "I'm not really a party person, Holly. I just play for them from time to time." He glanced down at the woman beside him then said, "But I'm glad you're here with me for company." Holly nodded with a smile and Shane stopped playing saying with a serious tone, "No, really. You moving in-you know, at first I thought I wouldn't like it too much, but in the long haul you have really made my life more bright and fun. I'm pretty glad. I really am."
Holly was silent as she stared up at Shane. His confession stunned her and she began to feel her heart beat a bit faster in excitment. She then took the time to really notice the man next to her. How the wind blew his long ponytail upwards and how dark and smoldering his eyes were as they gazed down at her from under his cowboy hat. How his body; slender and muscular in all the right places molded slight against the tree and his big strong hands holding his guitar. Holly also began to realize that she appreciated Shane just as much as he appreciated her.
The music changed suddenly; the strings of the violins and guitars transforming into something more soft and intimate signaling that it was time for a long awaited slow dance. Holly smiled to herself, knowing that fact and stood up, no longer feeling tipsy for some unknown reason. Shane frowned slightly as Holly started walking a few steps before she turned and held out her hand declaring, "You owe me a dance, Shane Kincannon. Let's go!" Shane almost declined, but seeing the light of the full moon cast a heavenly light on Holly's flaxen curls and the way her chocolate eyes smiled at him...resistance was futile. In almost one movement, as if something was making his body move for him, Shane's guitar was against the tree and his hand was in Holly's.
The dance was sweet and slow, letting the two get closer than they ever would thought possible. Shane was in paradise; Holly's beautiful gardenia fragrance gracing his nose and her body warm and inviting. Before he knew what he was doing, he stopped Holly in the middle of the dance and lowered his lips to hers. Holly's eyes widened for a second in pleasant surprise before she brought her arms under Shane's, gripping his body tighter to hers. The kiss was promising and sweet and it was all they needed for the night.
Shane and Holly kissed without shame; the stars once again their best audience.
