I am starting to feel like myself again! It's an amazing feeling. Boy was I turning into a cranky old lady. (Prolonged sleep deprivation and I are not friends ( Read more... )

Hooray for the peaceable kingdom! And hooray for Albee being such a good boy!

I really need to figure out how to get Cody to adapt to change better, and to try foraging. I got him to figure out that food sometimes hides inside toilet paper rolls...and then he forgot when I put one in his cage. I rearranged perches yesterday, and now he will ONLY sit on the one that didn't get moved or changed.

It's a little depressing. My poor scaredy boy.

Aw, poor guy! He'll come around eventually. He's had a LONG time to get set in his ways, so change will probably happen gradually. Keep trying!

He WAS sitting on his branch-perch when I went home at lunch today, so that's a start.

He just gets so bent out of shape when I change anything in his house, and he really simply doesn't DO anything, poor lazy man. He just likes to sit and stare into space, or get petted.

Or eat his own feathers. Little worried about that. He doesn't pluck, but he seems to strip the plumage down so it's just barbs left. I picked up some bitter apple spray to start using on him when he's done moulting...

I meant to tell you that I saw some frozen cornish game hens at the CO-OP. They might be a gajillionty dollars (I also saw a $75 goose - yikes).
Is your aunt doing any geese this year? We could ask for scraps...

That really is a wonderful thing. You've been doing amazing work with all of them, particularly as this is a mixed kingdom some people would swear couldn't coexist. :)

(We have a 12-week-old kitten right now. I'm wishing for peace, quiet, and lack of arguing a lot...)

Out of curiosity only, why can't cats eat red meat? We aren't feeding ours any, but I hadn't heard that one before and I try to keep track of every bad thing for them to eat.

Oh, I don't know if all cats shouldn't eat red meat, but when our guys eat it they puke it back up again.

Years ago when we started a raw diet our cats' vet told us to stick to poultry and small game. (I believe it was because that's what cats are most adapted to eating, but I'm not sure.) They've done well with chicken, turkey, duck, and canned fish (haven't tried raw fish yet), but lamb and beef come back up. (Yuck.) transversely won't let me buy rabbit, since he's quite attached to the live one we've got and feels weird about feeding dead ones to the cats.

Aw, 12-week-old kitten! I wish you infinite patience. (It's a good thing they're so cute, eh?)

Oh, OK. :) Sorry for the confusion! I appreciate the explanation, though. (Ours did taste a tiny bit of raw hamburger a long time ago and were fine, but obviously that wasn't making a meal of it.) Limiting foods to what the cats actually keep down makes perfect sense, obviously! Your vet's suggestions seem logical enough, for all that presumably a cat would not bring down a turkey in the wild.

Thanks! No kidding. We've had her 3 weeks, and it feels like a year. She was our best guess at what might integrate into our household best given very grumpy and territorial older cats, and so far it's working, to a point. Can't really blame them past that point - she *is* annoying.

Have you tried pork, deer, squirrel, or mouse yet? If you know people who hunt, deer and squirrel would be easy to get ahold of, and you could ask catless friends and neighbors to save trapped mice if your house doesn't get many. One of my coworkers traps mice in a Havahart and then lets her dogs chase them in the back yard to give them more exercise/entertainment.
