just for the other people that might read this entry, I don't see The Greek as a "bbq-y" place at all, just because it's outdoors. The bigger outdoor arenas would give more of a sense of that kind of thing, imo. It's an intimate outdoor venue with good acoustics and probably the most appropriate venue for Rufus to play in LA. Almost went to this show (would have gone if I didn't go to the Long Beach one in the beginning of the year).

also, there will always be drunks, at any concert. you just have learn to shut them out lol

I saw the premiere of Rufus' current tour when he played two shows here in Toronto. I don't get why some people made such a fuss over the fact that his whole first half was his Lulu album. I thought it really helped create the tragic atmosphere he was looking for. I think it would have been far more awkward had he played a song like "14th Street" and followed it with "Zebulon." I thought it worked quite well and he put on a wonderful, beautiful show.

I saw the first Toronto show too! Yeah, the Lulu portion makes perfect sense for this particular material. It is very sombre though, and a bit shocking if you're not expecting it... particularly for folks who haven't heard the new album yet. I didn't know about the no-applause rule beforehand and the person I went with hadn't heard the album at all, so it was a bit shocking to us. Overall we loved the show though. The second half was incredibly fun, and the first half made it even more special.

I actually went to the second one of Thursday night. :) Therefore, I knew what to expect because I'd read the review of the Tuesday performance on Wednesday morning. The no applause thing was a little strange and alienating at first but then I think I began to understand why he wanted it that way. He was staying in character, in a mindset, in a certain mood. I can respect that, although it felt bizarre at first.

Agreed!
