my mom always had me cover my hair when lighting candles with her as a little girl (she or i lit and did the bracha but I didn't have my own separate candles). Later I was confused b/c in some families i saw that girls don't light and definitely don't cover hair unless married. I never saw another unmarried girl covering hair while lighting so i stopped. what do you know about this?
It may be a mistake (married women not covering their hair at home except for lighting, so they assumed you had to cover to light) or it may well be a legitimate minhag. Some minority poskim said an unmarried girl should cover her hair, but it was never ruled like that out of places where goyim did it. Though it is possible that, to take this opinion into consideration too, girls covered for lighting.
I think I heard of some single girls covering at shul/neila/shofar.
