Nature Post! Cool Stuff!

Mostly pictures here, because I was out marveling at the loveliness of my lake again... I did not have the energy this weekend to go climb down into a ravine and then back out again. Maybe this weekend. Anyway... my lake had some presents for me that I might not have found if I hadn't gone out to one of my special spots...

Whoa, all of these photos are wonderful, especially the wild columbine, the lake and the turtle holes. I had no idea that turtles can be diggers, but that's very interesting!

Oooh a lovely LOVELY walkies. GOSH what super finds. A tulip tree - ours are just appearing now, we've one just outside by the Church and they are just superb right now. But that enchanting snowlflake Styrax bush... shall show that to Andrew, he'll DIE to get that in his garden. Its just yummy. SO pretty. Curious that it should be there, is it very sheltered there on The Hook where it is? Oops on Turtle Island ( ... )

I think columbines come in any color they feel like... they seem to do just about anything they want.

I suspect the shells will get eaten by ants and things like that... ants are a marvelous clean-up crew. I don't know if there are birds that would try to eat the baby turtles... I think they are too small for an osprey but we have gulls sometimes, and I suspect herons might try one for a taste, since they're very fond of frogs. Once in the water I'm sure there are lots of fish ready to have one for a snack!

I have no idea what those two pretty shrubs are doing out on the hook... I haven't seen them anywhere else. I'm not even 100% sure what they are.

I always thought cathedrals were meant to give people the feeling of being among great old trees... they were holy places before there were churches or even builders.

Hemlocks like the wet like spruces do... they don't tolerate dryness at all.

We have these awful tiny flies that bite... well, we have lots of kinds. Horseflies are HUGE and they will take such a chunk that you'll bleed from it! They were always around the bard. And there are little beasts... people call them three-corner flies because of the marks on the corners of their wings, but they give a nasty little bite too. And of course mosquitoes are out now and have to buzz around and leave itchy bumps...
