This is a random question, and I have a feeling it's directed lilairen's (or maybe Trevor's, although you don't know kanji, right?) way, although the floor is open

Hmm. I do know a little kanji, yes. Depends on if you want each character to be alphabetical, or if you want one character to represent one concept (though multiple characters can combine into more concepts). For example, 子 (ko) is child, 犬 (inu) is dog, so 子犬 (koinu) is puppy.
If you want to play with kanji, you'll need a good book and patience, though. It's a pain in the rear that's as bad as English spelling.
There's the Futhark, which you mentioned. Ogham for more Celtic, though that's a whole barrel of fun. Miscellaneous magical systems have symbol-sets to play with. Ceremonialists and the like. For choice paralysis fun, ideographic or partial-ideographic systems like Chinese characters or hieroglyphics.
Hm. You might get a kick out of alchemical symbolism; it hits the 'transformation' buttons.
.... I should get an alchemical userpicture. Hah. That should entertain me for a while.
