Summary: Written for the_browncoats Rewatch Fic Challenge: Ep 01 - Serenity. Jayne tries to understand why Kaylee is still pissed at him.
“Kaylee?”
Kaylee looked at Jayne from the corner of her eye but didn’t answer him, instead continuing to walk past him towards the common area.
“I said I was sorry,” he snapped at her.
And it was true, he had said he was sorry. Came to find her in the engine room last night to apologise, but he hadn’t yet apologised to Simon or any of the other passengers for making them feel uncomfortable, and that was just as important to her. She was used to his crassness after all and knew he never meant it in a harmful way, but their guests weren’t. Aiya, she could only guess at what the Sheppard must think of him.
“Will you talk to me gorramit?!”
Kaylee stopped, foot half way through the entrance way and turned to look at him over her shoulder, “No,” she said quietly before continuing to walk.
She should’ve expected it really, should’ve known that he would lose his patience at some point. But she hadn’t expected him to jump up from his weight bench, grab her by the elbow and pull her to the left and down the stairs into the storage area behind the med bay.
“Why?” he asked as he pushed her up against the hull and towered over her, “Why won’t you talk to me? Ain’t apologisin enough?”
“I’m ain’t the only one you need to apologise to Jayne,” she told him.
Jayne frowned, “What? You want me to say sorry to that pretty mouthed pofù?”
“Yes,” she nodded, folding her arms across her chest, “And there’s no need to be callin him names neither.”
“Why? Ain’t like he gives a shit about me or what I think. He’s gettin off in two days… come to think of it, he probably doesn’t care one little bitty about you, so why you gettin your panties all into a twist about him and his feelins?”
Kaylee blushed slightly and looked down at the floor, “It’s just nice to be nice Jayne.”
Jayne studied her for a moment, “You really do like him don’t you?” he asked, pulling back in surprise.
“It’s not like that,” she said quietly.
“Uh huh,” Jayne said with a nod, biting his bottom lip.
Kaylee sighed, “I don’t know why you care so much about what I think of him anyways. Ain’t like it’s any of your business,” she snapped at him.
Jayne looked like he’d been slapped, his face falling slightly, “No. You’re right. It ain’t, but…” he paused as he tried to think of what he was going to say.
“But what?” Kaylee asked curiously, wanting to know why he was acting so shy all of a sudden.
“But I want…”
Jayne was cut off by the sound of shouting coming from the cargo bay. He looked at Kaylee and then back up the stairs.
“We’ll finish this later,” she said as she turned and walked away, going to investigate what the disturbance was.
“Sure,” he said to himself before he looked up and watched her.
It pained him to see her walking away, so not having anything better to do, Jayne decided to follow her. Hell until the day she told him to stop, he’d always follow that girl wherever she went no matter how pissed she was at him.
