Birthday presents! This makes me so happy in an already evening! I love the philosophical discussion between Polly and River, that's really a cool place to overlap their concerns, and so them.
Comment fic galore, typos and all! I hope you had a fabulous day. I shall remember always the line from Pam Goodman's sun sign book: "There is nothing so painful as a Libra trying to make up her mind."
I hope you had a lovely birthday as well! Mine was pretty fabulously nerdy- among other things, I went out to dinner with a whole bunch of people from LJ on Sunday, had wonderful fandom discussions, and then it turned out our waitress was just as involved in fandom as we all are and so we hung out there for about four hours and got to know her and just had a grand time. And then some of us went out to Victorian-style lounge for fancy cocktails. It was AWESOME.

LOLOLOLOL so true. I just solve this problem by choosing to do absolutely everything. Except sleep, really.
As for the book, I haven't read it yet (the library doesn't have it), but it's "The Secret History of MI6 1909-1949" (that's the US title; the UK title is "MI6: The History of the Secret Intelligence Service 1909-1949"). I heard it's around 800 pages.
Gosh, and it's pretty cheap on Amazon. I ended up buying a bunch of books yesterday because my library system didn't have them. Oh woe. There is a book I am especially trying to find, Chinese Liverpudlians and so far it's only in the UK.
Libras do rule, even if we can never make our mind up in a restaurant.
That is a hard book to find. Extensive as the NYPL is, it's not in their catalogue either. I'm curious about it now. There are a few copies available on eBay though. I saw some mention of it on BBC Radio 4 in a Google search just now.

Actually, I can make up my mind in a restaurant usually; I'm a foodie and usually end up coming up with the restaurant list among my friends and coworkers. My sister's a Libra too but the two of us are total opposites.
I have now, of course, just given away subplot. But there is a very, very interesting and sad history of the Chinese sailors from Liverpool as well as the "Lascars" more generally, which I've thought less about. When I was researching Part 1 and developing the backstory, the Chinese Liverpool community became part of it -- in my head, I knew it was there, even if I never developed it. I have assumed that Kwong Lee and Lin Kun have 2 adult sons, both of whom are in the merchant marines.
With all the concerns in the LJ and Dreamwidth communities about race fail, Haiti fail, and the fact that I'm tromping all about ethnicities to which I do not belong (though family members do), I'm really trying to at least have a researched basis when I go there. Errrm,, right then. Onward. I may try eBay but the sales were all in the UK.
I love this so, so much. Polly! River! It's not my birthday, of course, but this little beauty makes today very special. And, you know, it's always good to remember that there are never as many of those never, ever to be broken rules than one suspects.

I hope the research goes well. I'm very much looking forward to whatever you come up with.
