Star Wars: the Old Republic

About 12 years ago, I was an EverQuest fanatic. EverQuest was one of the first generation of its kind: a big-budget, graphics-intensive, Massively Multiplayer, Online, and (theoretically) Role-playing Game.  Its precursors were the text-based Multi-Use Dungeons, which had been around since the 80s with much the same mechanics but no graphics to ( Read more... )

I was thinking of throwing that bit in, but I hadn't even mentioned companions yet, and this seemed long enough already.

And yeah, I don't mind not having the companions in a fight, but it'd be nice if they could just auto-show-up for the conversations. n.n

This is where I plan out my future action bar use.

The smuggler really, really needs UI mods. Hopefully they will be available in the near future! Specifically, it's not easy enough to see my Upper Hand proc stacks and I want to be able to track my Slow-Release Medpacs on a target so I know when I need to refresh them.

I know for a fact that COH allows you to pile up action bars, but even so, I only ever used shift-number to access a second set. SWTOR is the first game that's made me go to ctrl-number to access a THIRD set.

I don't think it's good that it's so complicated...

But, I have to admit that it kicks tail when my smuggler, being attacked by some random thug, kicks him in the 'hyperdrive' (Dirty Kick), goes behind him, hauls out his scattergun and blasts him in the back. (Back Blast), then Pistol Whips to finish him off, gaining Upper Hand to unleash Blaster Volley on his buddies. Even if I could just have used Thermal Grenade, waited, and used Thermal Grenade again.

Yeah, in CoH I usually had two or three power bars open, but almost everything I used in combat was on one.

I combed over my current power list and set up three bars with ranged/heal/melee and an alternate cover bar. Most of them are only two-thirds full, but I figured (a) the keys after 6 are not much easier to hit than shift-1 or ctrl_1 and (b) I'm going to get MOAR POWERS anyway, as you pointed out.

Trying to fit everything on one bar seemed futile. x.x

Oh -- I don't actually have 'cover' on a slot. You can hotkey 'cover' separate of the slot bars, so it's on F for me.

And I didn't understand how Upper Hand worked until you were describing it incidentally. So I read the descriptions on all the powers while I was at it, and now maybe kind of understand the theory. Using it in practice -- yikes. @.@

The only story threads I feel bad about not following are other peoples' class quests. I sort of vaguely get that you're after someone, and Trask is doing odd jobs for the Dark Queen, but the specifics are kind of iffy. Even though I've seen all the dialog for the last three missions.

As for having too many powers, wow. As a Jedi Sage my attack sequence went something like 'throw thing, shoot rocks, nothing's recharged so charge up the annoying slow attack, shoot more rocks, throw thing'. Lately, I've gotten a couple dots that I can rotate in instead of the annoying slow attack. Yay!

For heals, I have small expensive fast heal, slower but otherwise better in every way heal, and instant force bubble thing.

Then I have lightsaber attacks, which are basically useless.

I stopped even bothering with the CC against anything but insanely hard groups like the ones in the machine shop, since somebody always broke it. I'm pretty sure it was usually Trask since trooper powers tend to have pointless aoe splash.

The main part of the smuggler story that you're missing is this ( ... )

Yeah. The jedi counsellor story has you actually catching the big bad on Tython before you leave the planet, and then in apparently unrelated news, when you get to Coruscant your master is 'sick'.

I bet they'll turn out to be related somehow though -- maybe whoever was driving the twilek mad is also the one working on your master?
