When you think about it, a lot of the old Disney movies had scary stuff for kids. @_@
I'm glad you listed the worms from The Little Mermaid. I was torn to either list that or Ursula stealing Ariel's voice.
(Just so you know, I've read One Piece and Brook's story isn't really scary, it's just sad. He died from a disease and due to a devil fruit power he was brought back to life. To put it simply, he's a zombie that doesn't eat brains. ^_~ )
When you think about it, a lot of the old Disney movies had scary stuff for kids. That's what made them good ;) their plot wasn't excessively watered down for kids and you could find anything (love, death, sadness etc)
hehehehhe! Even if I didn't left coments, these days I'm learning about your (scary) favorite moments in those nostalgic movies. Now, a shame of me because I never watched all those Disney movies, but after checking those clips, I have to say they have a bigger quality that current animation movies.
-the Follo scenne of "Beata Maria" is just amazing! I love it. What interesting way to portrait the priests' lust for the gypsy woman in a movie that is suppused to be for childrem. A++
The spanish version of Hellfire is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OImOVo1_ajQ Yes, I'm still surprised they could get away with SO MUCH at that time (the movie was criticized because it was too scary for children, anyway ^^) I recommend watching it, it's really good and it has some great musical numbers. My second favourite song is sung by Clopin:
Can I just say that Clopin was my favorite character from the movie? A friend even got me a Clopin plush back in the day. (And yes, I still have him.) I loved that song! XD
The thing with Disney is that even though the content is usually 'child friendly', it doesn't mean that they can't include things that will go completely over a child's head. When I watch Disney movies now I notice a lot of subtle things in the movies that most adults ought to be able to pick up on, from why Frollo was really smitten with Esmeralda, to how Simba and Nala suddenly had a cub at the end of the movie. ^_-;
Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame was tamer than the book, but still a very powerful movie. I'm still hoping it gets released to DVD one of these days as it has some of my favorite songs (especially Frollo's song!)
Oh gosh, Hunchback of Notre Dame! It's funny because my sisters and I all didn't really get freaked out by anything, at least until the end when Frollo is hanging onto the waterspout that suddenly grins (growls, roars, smiles?) at him before breaking off and sending him to his doom. Apparently talking gargoyles are okay, but cathedral decorations coming to life are not! (And it's such a fine line since gargoyles are used as water spouts sometimes..)
The whole drunk scene with Dumbo and Timothy was pretty weird...
Yes, I wonder what were they smoking when they thought of that scene in Dumbo...well at least it's a good publicity against getting drunk (I remember thinking "if wine makes you LIKE THAT, I'm not drinking a drop of it" XDDD) But are we sure there wasn't some LSD mixed? XDDD
Well, it's no secret that Walt Disney's animators back in the day liked to go out to drink after work (I imagine some still do to this day) so I'm betting the strange things they animated were based on what they experienced when drunk. But like you, seeing how Dumbo reacted to it made me all the more wary of alcohol! I plan on never touching the stuff.. XP
When you get really really drunk you don't have allucinations XD: the world spins around you and you throw up and the morning after you have a tremendous headache (I never got really drunk myself, anyway, just dizzy) Seeing things like pink elephants on parade is something that happens if you use LSD or smoke bay leaf (my cousin smoked bay leaf thinking it was like marijuana and without knowing it was harmful...a couple of puffs and he felt like his body had died and he couldn't move at all, while the guy next to him started seeing GNOMES)
yeah i remember too about the pink elephants, that was weird when i first saw it. i actually just finished watching Brook's story from one piece and I cried! It was very sad. I cried during Nami's backstory too!

I read from wikipedia that Brook went in search of his body but it had already decomposed so he was stuck as a skeletron.
