Jemaine sighed impassively. "I think it's probably an improvement on his part." He then glanced at Bret in childish annoyance as he realised that wasn't what he had meant. He was annoyed, of course, at the topic of Bret's homosexuality being brought up again. And the self-deprecation. Which was really only funny for so long.
"You know," Jemaine began dryly, tapping a finger against his stomach. "Some people hypothesise that he was gay, Jesus."
Bret wasn't sure what Jemaine meant by the first part. But it was usually easier to just pretend that he did. "Yeah." Except that it sounded kind of immodest. "If you think so." That was better.
And the second part was just bizarre. "Really? But everyone's so against it..." Like you. You seem to be against it. "Like, fundamentalists." He supposed there weren't really fundamentalists in Rowan. Just people who were demons and people who weren't. And the worldwalkers. Maybe some of them were fundamentalists. He hoped not.
He glanced at Jemaine, cautiously. "Are you a fundamentalist, Jemaine?"
Jemaine's expression swiftly became insulted. "What?" He turned away and sulked in the direction of the table, arms crossing over his chest. Not that Bret didn't have any grounds for his question, really -- but who asked someone you seem to really have a problem with homosexuality, are you a fundamentalist or are you just a dickhead?
Well, it was offensive.
"What are you trying to say, Bret?" Jemaine ground, rubbing at his wrist.
"No," Jemaine snapped before taking on a more hushed tone, "No, I'm not against it. Why would I be against -- I have friends who are, nmm, into men. And obviously ladies who are into ladies."
He cleared his throat and continued to glare at the wall. "No, Bret, I'm not against it."

He fidgeted with his jumper, not meeting Jemaine's eyes for fear of what he might answer when he asked, "Are you...are you against it?"
