Jemaine, as he shouldered his way into the apartment, hadn't really taken into account the fact that he might feel exhausted after his sojourn with Cho, his mind in other places. But as luck would have it he was, terribly. He briefly contemplated going to bed, could already see himself curled into the pillow, but instead found himself greeted by an earnest, if not sour, Bret. Who was fixing a shelf.

No bed, then.

"Hey man," Jemaine greeted, weary, crossing the apartment. "Probably should've done that when it happened months ago."

Bret ignored him more purposefully now. At least he was doing it. Jemaine shouldn't try to discourage him from things that needed doing. Or encourage him into doing things he apparently didn't want.

Bret didn't know how much of the second part was sarcasm. He wished he did.

Alright, maybe he was overreacting. He hammered the final nail in and spit the rest into his hand. "Whatever, man." Don't be stupid. Don't ask about Cho. Don't ask. "How'd it go with Cho?" Flip. "I mean, your test." Of course.

"It was all right," he shrugged, moving to sit into a chair. "I'm a magician."

Let the celebrations begin.

Jemaine leaned his head back and closed his eyes, too exhausted to go into detail about suspicions of satanic rituals. He also happened to be full of sandwich which really wasn't helping the situation. "Bret, you probably shouldn't put those nails in your mouth. They haven't invented the tetanus shot yet."

Magician. Yeah, that made sense. At least he wasn't a wizard. "Awesome, man."

He glanced over his shoulder, frowning at Jemaine. "Probably not. But they have magic doctors. No need." He wasn't sure that was how tetanus worked anyway. And he was probably up to date.

Huh, medical records. What a thing to suddenly miss.

He turned around completely, leaning against the wall. Casual. Nonchalant. Nothing like he felt. He felt tense. But he had to practice hiding it, for both their sakes. The only thing that betrayed this was how his hand shook as he ran it through his hair.

Awesome, right. "Awful lot of death associated with magicians," Jemaine returned tiredly, opening an eye. "Magic isn't stable -- powerful. Something." He hadn't really read through the book thoroughly. Most of it was based on hypothesis and assumption anyway.

At least Bret wouldn't be losing any limbs.

Jemaine watched Bret play with his hair distractedly and -- oh. "Cherry gave me some shampoo. Um. To use when I cut your hair." He flagged a hand at his bedroom.
