Wednesday evening (anyone can tag, Bret isn't paying attention XP) weedyshyguy October 15 2009, 15:35:29 UTC
As they walk, Bret is doing his best to keep Cho company but eventually they run out of ideas for twenty questions and fall into a companionable silence. Bret can't help but fill it with snatches of the melody that has started forming in his head. It's sort of repetitive and he only has a few words to go with it. By the third day it occurs to him how annoying this must be.

Apologizing, he decides he'll try to get whatever passes for alone time in a caravan and starts drifting through the crowd, doing his best not to stay near any one person for too long for fear of irritating them.

He isn't really paying much attention to his route and probably passes the same people again and again without realizing as he weaves back and forth through the crowd.

"Hmm, pants, blankets, ponchos," he starts ticking them off on his fingers as he thinks aloud, "I made a tapestry once. Not very good. Got the owl all wrong." He shrugged. It was probably keeping some hobo in New York very warm right then.

Bret doesn't follow Tails' train of thought. "What do you mean? The beach is nice."

"Sounds like a useful thing," Tails said. "If you only messed up a little then you can always do better the next one."

"Oh, I just know someone who hates water so much he won't even learn to swim," he said in response to Bret confusion.

Bret shrugged. "Yeh, well. I like swimming." And now that he thought about it, swimming or surfing was all he'd probably want to do at the beach anymore. After what happened the other day...Well, he wouldn't be doing any romantic walks anytime soon.

There was an awkward lull in the conversation. Bret didn't know how to talk to this guy- fox- even if he was friends with Cho. They didn't seem to have anything in common. "Um...when did you get here?"

That was a good question. Tails had actually stopped paying attention. "I got here a little while after the demons took over he city, I guess," he confessed. "I've kind of stopped counting the days."

"Huh." Bret raised his eyebrows. "It's weird that we haven't talked yet." Which was, admittedly, all his fault. He liked animals, sure, but the talking ones...well, he'd been giving them a wide berth. He just wasn't sure he was ready for that.

Of course, he'd talked to fairies and elves, so he wasn't completely sure what his deal was about this. Possibly he was just weirded out by how they could be similar to creatures back home but still talk and think and not in that cute way that people do like they do with babies. After talking to the drag- Temeraire -the other day, he was a little more conscious of his discomfort, but he wanted to fix it.

A little at a time, of course. "I think it's been almost three months, for me. And the demons invaded...a month in? Maybe more than that." He thought about this. "So you don't know the elves at all, huh?"

"That's all right," Tails said. "I've actually been kind of keeping to myself a little trying to figure this all out." He was failing spectacularly since everytime he turned around something else was going on. "Anyway, now that we've met it might be easier to talk a little."

Tails had figured that Bret was one of those people who wasn't from a place animals talked...since no one else was...so he simply approached the situation with a cheerful smile.

"Well, if you do figure anything out, tell me. People keep asking me questions that I just can't answer, man. Makes me feel sort of stupid." He shrugged. It didn't help that there were all these scientist sorts of people around. Even if they didn't know anything, they knew why.

"I'll do that, can I ask the same?" Tails felt rather dumb in this situation as well, to be perfectly honest. "Figuring things out alone doesn't work out well here."

"Yeh, sure." Though he was fairly certain he'd never figure anything out on his own. He'd had such a hard time talking to Maxwell- except, wait. He did get something out of that. "Actually, I was talking to this guard the other day. Maxwell. He sort of explained why they're at war. Something about the elves coming up and the demons going down and now there's not enough room."

"Yeah I guess that would cause some serious problems..." Not that Tails personally knew anything about that. It just made a lot of sense to him.
