Bret arrived, not really sure that he wanted to be in public for too long, but he'd said he'd come. He didn't much like Gob but he hoped that maybe he'd be able to help if anything went wrong. He had a feeling that it might. If he had to stand in the back to avoid Cherry and Cordy, that was alright. After all, he'd have to see them up close again eventually.

Barney hadn't exactly been hanging out lately. All the really cool people were still knocked out, and he knew better than to try his luck at scoring with any of the ladies here. There was nothing to drink except water, and nothing to do, and it was really starting to suck.

So when Gob had written up that ad announcing his airquotes magic show end airquotes, Barney had been pretty excited. Sure, it was going to be a total disaster, but knowing Gob, it would be an entertaining disaster. He wasn't gonna miss it for the world. Like he had anything better to do.

Bret was already there when he got to the clearing, and hey, it had been a while since they bro'ed out. Barney slung his arm over Bret's shoulder, probably surprising him a little; squeezing the back of his neck in one of those kind of hugging kind of shaking bro grabs.

"Bret! How've you been, man?"

Bret started slightly at suddenly being grabbed, but relaxed (a little) when he saw it was Barney. As for Barney's question...He knew what he was going to say. 'Fine, man. How're you?' But it wasn't true. He was hurt and lonely and confused and he missed Cherry even if he knew he should probably be angry at her but he couldn't be because he'd already been separated from her once and if he lost her as a friend or companion or whatever, that'd mean losing Cordy, too, wouldn't it? And he missed Jemaine, too. More than ever, now that he didn't have him to call girls 'bastards' for him, which he could never quite bring himself to doing and Cho wasn't quite as explicit about (though he suspected that was sort of how she felt, even if she didn't say it, and he appreciated her being on his side).

"Fine, man. How're you?"

Whoa... What the hell? Barney suddenly found himself with a head full of thoughts that definitely weren't his. He yanked his hand away from Bret's neck like he'd been burned and stared at it for a while.

He should probably be pretty freaked out, but dude... that's awesome!

"Whoa, you and Cherry? And Cordy?" Barney asked excitedly, completely ignoring what Bret said, and the fact that hey, he probably didn't want to talk about any of this. "What happened? Tell me everything."

Temeraire spotted the changes to the clearing, as well as a few people standing around. He did not recognize them, but while he would have liked to see the silent man and Cedric again he was always happy to meet new people unless they were going to be afraid of him, which was always annoying. He landed towards the back edge of the clearing and coiled himself up as tightly as possibly, because even though the clearing was fairly large, it would not be able to fit many more people with him there. Well, they could always sit on him if they needed to.

"Is there going to be a show?" he asked, excitedly. He had not seen a stage performance since he had been in China.

Cordelia lingered near the back of the clearing, watching Barney and Bret as they talked. She wasn't furious with Bret anymore, but she still wasn't ready to talk to him yet. She still felt like he hadn't acted like a friend should act, and that made her doubt whether he had ever really been her friend at all. And all those bad thoughts just made her head hurt and she didn't have any medicine to make headaches go away in the middle of the desert ( ... )

"I'm Temeraire." Cordelia seemed nice and she had a pretty ribbon in her hair, so Temeraire forced himself to remember his manners and bowed his head before asking curiously, "Is the show going to be real magic?"

He knew of course that there were magic shows at home for entertainment, which used slight of hand and clever devices instead of real magic. He was not sure if Rowan would have the same thing or if it would have shows using real magic. Either way it would be nice--he had never seen a magic show of the first kind, and he had not seen anyone in Rowan use magic for anything other than catching fish.

"I'm not sure," Cordelia responded cautiously. "Most people here have magic, but I don't know if they usually put on magic shows with it or not..."

She shrugged slightly. "Of course, my kind of magic-users are apparently called magicians and I was told they're known for doing this kind of thing. Card tricks and handkerchiefs that disappear up your sleeve. Illusions and things. Some people at home performed magic like that."

She looked up at the dragon curiously. "Are you from Rowan? Do you do magic? Do you give people rides on your back?"

Gob poked his head out from behind his tree, scanning the arrivals so far. Bret and Barney, of course. And the dragon- which, by the way, was pretty awesome; he hadn't seen the thing up close yet. And that hot bartender lady. Nice. No Cho, though. That was a little disappointing.

Still, he wanted to get things rolling, and what the hell, they were all just standing around.

Gob ducked back behind the tree and cupped his hands around his mouth. "Ladies- uh- Lady and gentlemen, please be seated! The spectacle will begin shortly!"

Lady? Bret looked around. He'd obviously been too distracted by this strange conversation with Barney to-

Oh. Cordy. His stomach clenched nervously. He knew it was rude to just look, so he gave a cautious little wave and a shy, apologetic half-smile.

Please don't hate me.

As Bret nodded at her, Cordy pursed her lips together. She should have thought about how to respond to that. She didn't want to wave back, that was like pretending nothing had happened. And she couldn't smile, she was still too upset. But ignoring him was just mean and despite whatever mean things Bret had done, she was fairly certain they were done out of obliviousness, not out of spite.

So before turning away, Cordelia gave Bret a small nod of recognition.

Ouch. That was cold. Bret turned away too, knowing this wasn't the time. Still, he couldn't help but remember what Cherry had said- they didn't know how much time they had here. He didn't want to wait too long to make up with them.

It was a little morbid, but he had to think that way now, didn't he?

Maybe she'd be more interested in talking over the journals. He could write her a note. The upside of not having to face her was she couldn't scream or hit him or anything. There were downsides, like the fact that he wasn't sure if he'd be able to write 'goodbye' any better than he'd be able to say it. Maybe Cho could help with that. He hoped it wouldn't come to that.

THE SHOW BEGINS remove_alldoubt October 4 2009, 23:19:27 UTC
Gob waited a few minutes after making the announcement. Then he cupped his hands around his mouth again.

"Presenting: A Magician Named Gob!"

Or Wizard. Whatever. With that, he jumped out from behind the tree and made his way into the performance area. Somewhere in the piles and piles of clothes that had appeared earlier in the week, Gob had managed to find just the sort of casual clothes he used to wear to perform in: dark pants, a white button-down shirt, a dark sport jacket, and sandals.

As he walked toward the center of the stage, he started singing the opening riff to 'The Final Countdown.'

"Na-na NAA NAAA! Na-na NA-NA-NAA!"

Bret's mouth fell open. What. The Final Countdown? Really? That's just beyond bad.

In a weird way, it was almost funny. It was the sort of thing Jemaine would do to make fun of people who liked bad music. Of course, Gob seemed to be very serious about this. Which almost made it funnier.

But he didn't laugh because he was too busy gaping.

Demyx had seen Bret and gone over to talk to him, but the show started as soon as he got there. When Gob started singing, it just got a headtilt from the Nobody. Bret seemed to know what it was though, and... he couldn't tell if it was impressive, or really bad. That expression could be for both.

"What's he doing?" Demyx asked quietly, still very confused.

"I...I think he's doing his own background music," Bret murmured, his mouth finally closing. He might've offered to play if he'd had his lute. This was just...sort of weird.

Actually, it wasn't a huge departure from what he might do for fun. Like, air guitar. Goofing off. But Gob was just so into it. Man.

Guy settled down, in the back of the clearing, for once at rest -- he didn't have anything he was carving, weaving together, fixing. He was interested, he was paying attention, but he was withdrawn.

Temeraire looked around curiously at the crowd and noticed the silent man. He would have called his name, but he did not know what it was, so he stuck his neck out and said, "Hello, again."

Guy reached up, stroking a hand along Temeraire's snout, in greeting. He liked the dragon, oddly enough. Gargantuan, strange, completely out of anything resembling Guy's world. But, then, that's why he wanted to explore space in the first place.

Temeraire inched as much closer as he could and nuzzled back. As much as he enjoyed talking to anyone who would stand still long enough for a conversation, Guy's presence was particularly comforting for some reason.

Perhaps it was because he couldn't easily pump Guy for information, which while important and something that came naturally to Temeraire, often made him a bit anxious, since there were so many new and confusing thing to learn about.
