Bret winced at the mention of the unicorn. He understood the wonder she felt. He'd felt it too. But she sounded happier about it than he could. To see that sort of beauty and then have it reject you...Actually, that seemed to happen to him a lot.

He ignored the wave of self-pity that threatened to knock the gentle smile from his face. He'd have to play a really happy song.

"Yeh, actually, I figured you might like some music while you cook. Or make vacuums, I guess." He actually cracked a bit of a smirk at this. She was certainly a jack-of-all-trades. And she'll reject me too. Shut up, brain.

He went to pull the lute around to begin playing and blinked in surprise when he pulled his hand out of his pocket with the silk wrapped around it. He stared at it, momentarily, and then looked at her. He flushed with embarrassment. Oh well, no use trying to hide it now.

"Um. Would you prefer I wear this, I mean, while I'm around you?" And all the knives.

"You can if you want to." Cho wasn't all that worried. Now that she knew about his luck thing she just had to be a little more cautious around him. Being prepared cut down on the chance of injury. Bret had been so upset before, though, thinking of hurting people, of hurting her. "It doesn't make a difference to me one way or the other." She smiled a little, and stretched her arms over her head, bending her elbows then and letting her forearms cross behind her head. "I'm not afraid of you, or your magic," she promised him. "And I think maybe I should give the vacuum a rest for a while. I don't have a proper container for it, and I don't really have a rubber fitting tight enough to maintain it."

Bret's hand faltered midway between his head and his pocket. If she was alright with it...Well, he wanted to see whether there was any truth to the 'good' luck part of the equation, anyway.

"Alright," he said, tucking the fabric back into his pocket. He adjusted his lute and whipped through the song catalog in his mind. He knew plenty of cheery songs and plenty that were meant to be inspiring but just didn't do it for him. He flashed on Cassandra's reaction to 'Amazing Grace' and knew that he'd be better off picking something secular, just to be neutral.

Ah. There it was.

Be began to play, focusing much harder on watching his fingers on the strings than was really necessary for him to play comfortably. But when he sang, it came out with a confidence he didn't really feel, and somehow, hearing it made him feel more confident, in an endless cycle. If it kept up like this, soon he'd be belting without holding back.

"Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face ( ... )

Cho's expression shifted and changed while Bret sang. The song was beautiful, but intimate, and probing, and was so exactly what she was feeling right now - how close must he have been watching her to pick up on it, to know what she was thinking, to know how to play her feelings like that? It was sweet, in a way, but also a little... creepy was not the right word, because she didn't think Bret could ever be creepy. He was too sweet to be creepy. But he'd met her such a relatively short time ago, and to give her something so intimate and personal...

Cho had no idea how to react to it. None at all, but she was going to have to come up with one fast, because the song couldn't go on forever. It was just so beautiful, though, and Cho was having a hard time focusing on anything other than how much she liked it, and that the happiness was growing inside her again, making her want to cry.

Cho looked surprised, but not unpleasantly so, so he kept going, closing his eyes and letting himself feel the flow of the song. The lyrics were strangely uplifting, despite the constant connections to the fleeting nature of life, it made him feel better. Not to mention the fact that it reminded him not to dwell on things because, really, what was the point in the end?

"Do You Realize - Oh - Oh - Oh
Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die -

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize..."

Bret finished the song and, slowly, opened his eyes. He felt better, but he was a bit nervous about how she might feel.
