Oki hadn't been sure whether or not he should attend the meeting at first. He still wasn't familiar with the workings of a city, so there might have been no point. He did feel the need to at least have a basic idea of what was going on though, and such a meeting seemed the most likely way. Having decided that, he arrived there to find that there weren't many people there at all.
Attempting to be unobtrusive, he simply moved to the closest free chair and sat down, crossing his arms and waiting. It wasn't very likely that he could say anything of consequence, but he was definitely willing to be there if he could help something.
"All right," Jack said, looking around the room. He was a little disappointed at the turnout, but he didn't let that show on his face. "Let's cut to the chase, shall we? This city is in trouble. It can't handle the number of incoming natives, most of it is still uninhabitable, the economy is still in its infancy, and inside of a couple of months it will very likely collapse if things continue on the way they've been going. I took on this job as a temporary solution to a problem, but it needs someone with the power to manage this city properly
( ... )
After a short stretch of silence, Cris leaned forward in his chair. Didn't bother to stand. It wouldn't make him much taller.
"Of course I may be wrong," he began with a glance around the room, concluding with Jack, "But I don't think you're going to find much competition here. You've received a vote of confidence from -- more or less -- every worldwalker in the city, including myself. So I'm not looking to challenge you, but if you need more assistance... A sort of deputy ambassador. I'd be more than willing to step up for the job."
Jack clapped his hands loudly and grinned. "Yes!" That is exactly the kind of attitude I'm looking for," he said, pointing at Cris. "We need to take a proactive role, all of us. I'm willing to do most of the work, but I can't do it properly without support - not without letting it take over my life completely."
Tails shifted in his seat. He was perfectly certain he didn't know anything about running a city, but if he could help more with making it livable then he was on board for that.
"Yeah, I'm not really sure who could take over your job, Jack," he said. "But I think maybe some parts could be divided among us maybe."
"I think that together we can probably get this city back on track in..." He did a bit of mental math, and optimistically included 80% of the Worldwalkers not present at the meeting. "Three weeks. In another month we could have it in a place where, once the initial repairs and improvements have been finished, we might even be able to run at a small profit, begin saving money for the next disaster, natural or otherwise, so we're not left scrambling. I feel that the most important thing is for us, all of us, to show these changes in a positive light, and to make sure that it's known that none of us are being given preferential treatment when it comes to these new restrictions, particularly the taxes."
Well that made sense, Tails figured. "Do you really think we can be that well along in about two months?" he asked, his tone suggesting it didn't sound out of the question. A little hard work from all of them could probably yield a surprising amount of progress if more people pitched in.
"Absolutely. I'm not saying It will be fully stable and self sufficient, but we can get it headed firmly in that direction - to a place where it no longer requires constant attention." He laughed a little and leaned back against his desk. "I can start going home at night." Not entirely a joke, but laughing about it was better than being bitter about it. At least now he had the help he'd needed in the beginning. Better late than never. "In two months we can lay the foundation, yes, I do believe that."
Touya hadn't meant to be late, but he wanted to talk to the teacher for a minute after school. That had turned into a sort of extended lecture which, on any other day, was a good thing. Right now though...not so much.
When he arrived at the meeting, he slipped in without a word and found a chair near Jacks desk to sit in. That way, as soon as the meeting ended he was right there to see what he missed...because he must've missed something right?
