Sam remembered very well how Jhelbor had shone during the battle for the city, and it wasn't anything like this. That had been chaos, a jumble of auras and spells and shimmering rain. This was more like walking through an interminable dazzling fog. The voices didn't help, either. He was constantly distracted, recently to the point that it was difficult to work.

Now why did that seem so familiar.

He was spending more and more time at home, but once in a while he just had to get out and get some air, and get away from his entirely unhelpful roommate. He thanked whatever god or gods had sent Guy back to him -- really he did. But every time he remembered Guy had some sort of connection back to that god, and still couldn't help him at all... That got a little frustrating.

He wasn't much interested in walking, now that he was outside. He broke away from the traffic of the walkway and settled down by a building, pulling his knees up to his chin. He barely even registered the elf sitting a matter of feet to his left.

"Brisa," he repeated. "You have a..." There wasn't a better way to put it, was there? "...a relationship with one of them?"

"I have a patron goddess, yes," Mel confirmed, smiling a bit at Sam's awkwardness, though in a serene way rather than a mean one. "Although I suppose it is a bit like being married. You have to put up with each others' foibles forever and the words 'yes dear, of course you're right' are never a bad idea."

Sam's smile was on the bitter side. He shifted and fidgeted.

"How, um. How'd you know she was your patron?"

"Oh, I got lucky. Brisa is blissfully straightforward compared to some of her peers. She showed up in my dreams one night and started grilling me on the nature of subjective time from a mortal perspective, and we've been politely interrogating each other ever since."

He'd been rather hapless at the time, not wanting anything to do with the gods as per elven doctrine, but utterly intrigued nevertheless. "From what I've heard, though, the method and degree of directness varies a great deal between different gods."

"Some of them might send their... chosen shaman a gift?" As though he were asking that straight off the top of his head. Right.

Still, Mel was a stranger. A knowledgeable stranger at that, and Sam felt more comfortable asking him about this than any worldwalker. A worldwalker might get suspicious and start asking the wrong questions.

"I wouldn't be surprised." Mel told him, grinning a little at Sam's hopeful hypothetical. "I'd be a little wary," he added mildly, "but it's certainly not inconceivable, especially given how much more involved they've been becoming."

Sam had slowly folded in on himself: arms crossed, knees pulled up close.

"Feathers," he admitted in a mumble. "A couple of times I've seen feathers."
