There is a bookstore next to our downtown store, set deep into an open lobby (aka the Cave, home for some of the islands bats). They are lovely, and the people who work there are all glorious and I love them. One of them offered to get me a kitten, another offered to watch the store while I ran some errands (tonight was a surprise 12 hour work ( Read more... )

I'll post reviews as I read them. Yummy, yummy books!

Just to warn you, Water for Elephants is much more a book about the nature of aging than anything else. There's also fun, light, circusy stuff, don't get me wrong. But Rook and I were sort of caught off guard by its themes.

Still a good read! Also, jealous of your purchases! :-)

Yeah, that is not what I was expecting. I suppose I am not too surprised (being warned), but that isn't what it looks like. I am happy it is still a good read, as I'm still really excited about reading it. I miss you!

Rookie! I miss you horribly, and am very sorry about being so pathetically terrible about keeping in contact with you. You are very far away! Though it's possible I might end up in California despite previous plans, because that is where CalArts is, and that is an amazing grad school I want in to. We could be (long-distance) neighbors! It would be exceedingly exciting!

-As I haven't read Watchmen yet, I don't know how I feel. I know I was really wowed by Jeremiah's movie version (he had an epic project where he recorded BSFFAs voice acting for the comic, and put them over shots of the comic itself. It was really well done).

-I love the idea of an enjoyable read.

-I also think norseCODE sounds fantastic. I'll let you know after I've read it - from a distance, it seems just up your alley. I wish I had paid more attention to Lisa when we were covering Norse mythology - I have a feeling you'd enjoy it more thoroughly than I would. Conversely, if it's terrible you'd feel the pain more keenly. Yay, mediocrity?

You're not the only one who has trouble being impressed by Watchmen. I was very underwhelmed by it.

It doesn't help that I'd just finished reading all of Transmet right before I picked up Watchmen.

Excitement. *waves tiny flag*

I too am investing in literature. I ordered a book from Amazon on a whim, after a webcomic cartoonist whose work I read recommended it. It's about a post-apocalyptic world, which became so after all technology suddenly stopped working, and the laws of physics changed. I don't remember the name, sadly.

It's okay that you don't remember the name now - you will get the book and read it, and then maybe you can tell me if it's awesome or not!

Dies the Fire, by S.M. Stirling? Sohmer of LFG recommended it recently. Additionally, a friend of mine spent all summer trying to get me to read it--part of her argument involved explaining how essentially Rennies and SCAdians teamed up with... bikers, maybe? Former military personnel? Something like that.

Street Magic is way awesome. It's gritty in all the right ways, and the magic system is perfectly vague from what I can remember.

Awesome! I'm glad to hear it. I read the first chapter last night and wondered if it was going to be vague-town all the time (which would infuriate me). But the author does need to set up questions to be answered, and if she answers them well I'll be very pleased!
