the difference between a baptism and a christening is who makes the vows. A person who has reached the age of reason chooses to be baptised and makes the vows.

A christening is held when a person, typically an infant, is too young to make the vows on his (or her) own behalf; 2 or 3 adults (NOT the parents) make the vows on behalf of the infant. The adults additionally agree to raise the child in his or her parents' religion, should anything happen to the parents.

These days being a godmother or godfather is a more ceremonial position, but in previous centuries a godparent could potentially end up in the position of raising the child.
