In which in I fail at something millions of people do every day

May 07, 2012 17:08

My eye doctor appointment today did not get off to a right start. I had something come up at work, so I was away from my desk when my phone alarm went off. I called the office, they said I could still come, even late, and there wasn't a late fee. So I went, sat through the the usual round of putting my forehead against machines looking at blurry ( Read more... )

For what it's worth, I felt like this the first time I tried contacts (sometime mid-teenagerish). It was worth it; I wore them exclusively for a few years, though I did eventually switch back to just wearing them for sports.

Also it took me forever to be happy with my own way of putting in and taking out contacts, which was neither the way the doctor told me to do it nor the way my dad did it.

I know that eventually I would get the hang of it... but I don't know if I want to at this point. I went into the appointment thinking that I could try them out because my insurance would cover a majority of the payment. It only covers half of the "training" and "evaluation." If I kept buying them, they would apparently be covered in full, but the $130 thing is holding me back because I honestly think I wouldn't wear them that much.

I don't know. I need to sleep on it I guess.

I've heard this isn't uncommon at all. So don't stress over it yet. ♥

As for me, I pretty much wear contacts exclusively. I love having peripheral vision, and I feel I see better with them than with glasses. They do take some getting used to, but I've found I buy glasses anymore solely for use in the evenings/mornings (when I've taken my contacts out), or when I'm feeling to lazy to put them in or my eyes are just plain uncooperative (which will happen - if you don't get enough sleep, or too much sinus pressure, or sometimes your eyes will just go NO, though I've found that to be really rare).

Thanks. ♥

Eating did indeed restore some of my sanity and if it weren't for the price, I'd reschedule it right away. But the fact that I don't *plan* on using them exclusively or even all that often is dampening my desire to go through it again. But mostly it's the money. :/

This happens a LOT. I was privileged (heh) to watch a very together rocker chick, about 40, trying to take out contacts for the first time when I went in for my last eye appointment. Even with help, it took her a good 20 minutes and she was so embarrassed.

It took me a while to figure it out, too, but I love wearing them and I'm glad I persevered.

I can't imagine that *anyone* would find it easy the first time, though the lady helping me kept popping hers in and out and she had nails longer than mine.

I don't like touching my eyeball, but even so, if contacts were something I was planning on wearing a lot, I'd probably persist. As it is, I was only planning on using them for maybe working out or for going to the pool and stuff. I like my glasses; I like how I look in them... I don't know that $130 is a reasonable price to pay for something I'm not going to use full time.

When I had finally got them out, my eyes were sooo red. It looked like I'd been pepper-sprayed and they hurt. :(

Thanks! But I think at this point I'm going to hold off on getting them. I wasn't going to use them all the time - just when going to the pool and the gym. So the steep price doesn't seem worth it for something that I'm not going to use a lot.

It's terrible the first few times. And then it's awesome. Millions of people do this every day because they've BEEN doing it. I don't know anyone who just tipped their heads back, got them in in one and and hit their Staples Easy Button. It takes some acclimation time, esp considering your eyes are like "WTFBBQ?!11 ( ... )

I think I probably could get it eventually, but at this point, I'm thinking that if I'm not planning on using them full time (I'm not) then the price is a little steep for me. I was going to use them, at the most, for pool time and working out. $130 seems way too much for part-time use. I'd rather get a new pair of glasses. Hassle, plus the price = meh.

Maybe next year.
