eHarmony update and loong entertainment list

Nov 01, 2011 22:31

I've decided to cancel my eHarmony subscription. I've put more effort into it this time and still nothing's happening. Clearly this isn't being blessed by God, so there's no point to it anymore. I'm a little conflicted on whether or not to keep the info up or delete it entirely... it seems a waste to just delete all that info after all the trouble ( Read more... )

geekery, podcasts, gaming, romance or lack thereof, tl;dr, tv shows, cool links, books, reading, movies

We've talked about online dating, so you know my stance - and yet I keep going back because I don't have something like, say, college or church - places where I can meet people. But it's as you say - what people write on a page isn't WHO THEY ARE and so it's a total crapshoot whether or not what you like or dislike on the page has anything to do with them personally. No wonder people judge on looks with online dating - because you REALLY DON'T KNOW unless they're super preachy about something you vehemently disagree with :o/

In Tolkien relating fangirling: I am SO EXCITE about The Hobbit. The gal who works across the hall from me and I are totally making it happen. I want to see it on the big screen so bad - I mean, I've been flipping out over gifs and tiny behind-the-scenes pictures of shenanigans; who knows how much I'm going to fangirl about it when it actually comes out? Lots to be excited about next year: Hobbit, Hunger Games, Mass Effect 3...it's going to be a good year lol

yet I keep going back

Yeah. Even as I was writing it, I wondered if a few months down the line my rose-colored glasses will be back on and I'll give it another go. Maybe I should make a list of why I'm quitting it to remind myself. lol

SO EXCITE about The Hobbit.

ME TOO. I wish it was coming out *this* holiday season instead of next year.

flipping out over gifs

Ooh. Care to share?

Lots to be excited about next year

Indeed! And, to add to that list, Disney Pixar's Brave, and Avatar the Last Airbender's Legend of Korra!

I should re-read the Lord of the Rings series, since it has been a while.

Your post reminds me that I need to read Little Dorrit...:D

For whatever it's worth, I think your attitude towards the online dating thing shows commendable thoughtfulness and maturity.

*hugs* Have you tried something like MeetUp.com? I just learned about it yesterday--trying to make friends in my new home of Orlando--and it links you to whatever groups and organizations are in your area based on your interests. Book clubs, gaming groups, probably also church groups though I haven't started looking for a new church, yet (my dad's a minister, which has always made me really picky). It probably won't get you a date right away, but it could expand the pool of people you actually know by face and name quite a bit. Who knows what could happen. :)

As for your activity list: Full. Of. Win. :D I've been itching to read the Silmarillion again (usually an annual affair), but it's lost in the storage unit somewhere. o.o

I've heard of Meetup but never tried it. I may have to look into that!

I like the church that I'm attending now, but it is a smaller one and 99% of the guys my age there are married. I hate to go looking for another church just because it doesn't have any single guys... :/

I haven't read The Silmarillion since college. I remembering thinking it was like reading the Old Testament but with elves. lol

http://www.eventsandadventures.com/ Just recently aired on our radio station. They arrange 'adventures' for groups of singles with similar interests. The commercial said that they weren't a dating service. There's no long form to fill out and the only 'compatibility test' they do is to see what the individuals like to do. Did not realize they weren't local for us until I looked them up online. I have not researched them - have no reason to; married - so I have no idea if they're legit or not, but it might help? Also, Hubby and I used to attend a non-denom church that had a large number of singles. They had a special Sunday school group just for the singles since there were so many and they didn't fit in with the 'college' group or 'adult' group who were married couples. You may want to check your local churches' websites to see if they have singles' groups. IDK ( ... )

Thanks for the link! But... unfortunately the closest location to me is in Minneapolis (and by closest I mean it's 700 miles instead of 2000 miles away). :D Good idea though. Especially for people who just want to get out of the house.

I like the church I attend now - it's only problem is that all (or at least 99% of) the guys my age there are already married. It feels wrong to go to a different church just because I'm on the prowl. But, like I said, a good friend of mine is going to a different one and I may visit with her from time to time.

I have never really gotten into Tolkien...Blasphemy! :O J/k. To each her own? And, to be fair, Tolkien's actual writing takes some getting used to. One of the interviews on the DVD extras put it about right: Tolkien would not be published in today's market. lol (At least, not without extensive edits.) Then again, we can thank the current market of fantasy literature to Tolkien himself so ( ... )
