Sometimes I get tired of using (seeing) the word “Said” in any type of written media.  So, from (FFN)/user/angelofsuspense, I give you these (mostly alphabetized) suggestions:

Accused, acknowledged, added, addressed, admitted, advised, advocated, affirmed, agreed, alleged, allowed, announced, answered, antagonized, apologized, appealed, applauded ( Read more... )

findings, miscellaneous

That is quite the list! Hm, I think I like croaked and speculated and yelped.

It is nice to use some of these, sprinkled lightly - if there are too many I think it gets distracting from the story, but then, on the other hand, it also depends on the writer and the story. Some folks could use every single one of those back to back and make it work! Other people just use "said", but capture the emotion and action so well you're reading so fast the "saids" just flow past like pebbles in a stream, lol. Or something. I find I tend to repeat favorite indicators of emotion a lot, like quirking or furrowed brows - need to find other ways to show the same things.

It is massive - and I wish I could remember more of them when I am trying desperately to think of a word besides "said".

True.
No need to overload one's story with vocabulary that doesn't do much to advance the plot.
Repeating is fine, but I like a little bit of variety.
