Kindness of Strangers

Yesterday we returned the rental car. It was nice to have a car and we did much exploring -- however, it was nicer to return it and not have the hassle or worry. While we had the car we did some serious driving. We circumnavigated the island, with a lingering exploration of the leeward side. There we saw Kaneana Cave (spooky) and swam at the lovely ( Read more... )

It's great here, I am really having a lovely time. And anything with Jackie Chan is automatically wonderful. Mapuana said that they were going to open more Jackie's Kitchens, so maybe you'll get one in Seattle.

I don't know if I told you or not but my High School BF used to live at thoese Condo's @ Turtle Bay, Kuilima, the very ones I think Rwr used to vacation at! Any way, I had to take the bus many a night to and from my place and his place. Some nights he would catch it in front of MY place as late as 11:30 going towards Turtle Bay but coming home, I tried to always be at the stop before 10:00 PM.

When they say 'last bus' on the North Shore, they really mean it! *I think this is why my Mom was so nervous about you taking it! * :)

I am really glad that you hitched a ride. Remember you can always call Aurie to rescue you in an emergency situation. If she can't be the one to come get you she has 100 cousins, aunties that would!

I can't believe that Rwr used to vacation in those condo EVERY YEAR! When we were walking around, I was just boggled by the idea of geeky teen-age Rwr staying there. He said that one year there was a Renn Faire and thawas the funnest year he had there, though in general he thought it was pretty cool.

It does seem that it's easy to get North (or west?) away from Laie much later than one can get back to Laie. We asked the bus driver who dropped us at Turtle Bay when the last bus came there but she didn't know (she said it was her first day on that route). At that point, we only had the website schedule, which said the last bus was at 12 midnight. The website is subject to change without notice and apparently, suffers from some inaccuracies. It really wasn't a big deal, it was more of an adventure and I don't want you or your mom to worry. It makes a good story, no one was hurt and the worst, the very worst, was either we spent a load of money or slept on the beach. We live for adventure, especially on vacation! ;-)

I admire your adventurous spirit! Mark and I are on different sides of the rent a car fence. I took the bus every where when I lived there and once I got the hang of it there was only a couple times when I had problems. Plus, when Mark and I visit it is usually only for the max 14 days, that's a lot less than 5 weeks. You keep on keepin on sista!

I totally wish we could be there with you to celebrate July 4th (I am pretty sure I have rehearsals that day /night) but I will be thinking of you guys!

Generally, people consider being stranded and hitching rides in the back of a stranger's truck in the middle of the night a bit more hassle and worry than, say, the hassle of parking your rental car and the worry of it being stolen and having to file an insurance claim ;P

Glad you are having fun. Still think you are crazy for not renting a car.

The car rental is so outrageously expensive. (Cheapest we could find for the entire trip was $700. We could buy a beater for less than that, though that would be its own craziness.)

However, today we rode the bus to Haleiwa for an afternoon explore-adventure and dinner and rode the bus home after sunset without incident, so I think now that we have 1) a schedule and 2) a clear understanding of "last bus" we should be able to run around without incident! ;-)

Less hassle, but not nearly as much fun. Half the fun is the adventure of not knowing whats going to happen. Now sure hitching a ride with a ukele player is not as much fun as riding in the back of a truck with federales armed to the teeth, but you learn to adust ;)
