I- wow. This is utterly, utterly fantastic. Speaking as someone whose stance on vampires has always been along the lines of "...meh", this has made me a lot more interested in the genre, and a lot more interested in why so many people are interested. It also made me giggle a lot.
When you do research, it is a glorious, glorious thing. ♥ Would you mind if I linked to this on my journal?
Thank you! I admit, I do love to indulge in a good Twilight bitching session. I saw the trailer for Breaking Dawn at the movies today, and I was like, "Ah well, at least this is the end of it," and then the title card came up on the screen - for Breaking Dawn Part One.
Oh, I think there's a lot of perfectly valid criticisms of Twilight (oh, so many valid criticisms). The one I see the most though, is "Girls like it". Which is like the opposite of valid.
Breaking Dawn does not need to be two movies. (Neither does the third book of the Hunger Games. Deathly Hallows, what hath you wrought?!)
Oh, splendid! Although I am supposed to be working and don't have time to write a proper response, I did want to tell you how much I enjoyed this.
I don't think you mentioned one of my favorite early vampire films - Dreyer's weird and fascinating Vampyr, which is based on Le Fanu's "Carmilla." First part is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gBzNioJROI
(The movie was cut to pieces by European censors when it came out, and I don't know how complete the YouTube version is; there's a newish Criterion DVD with a pretty full version.)
OH! I read about Vampyr when I was first choosing vamp movies to watch, and for some reason it never made it on the list. Obviously this will have to be rectified.
Recently I feel sort of embarrassed by the fact that I watch all this vampire stuff since Twilight has given it a bad name (and yelling IT'S NOT ALL TWILIGHT) at the top of my lungs doesn't really help. SO I LOVE THIS POST. And I blame Buffy.
I've developed something of a reputation for my vampire nerdishness in RL, and sometimes people (who don't know me very well) will be like, "Oh, so I guess you like Twilight then?" To which I reply: "HOW DARE YOU."
So I understand the embarrassment. Somehow we will have to find a way to live and enjoy vampire TV shows without shame.
And I blame Buffy.
It's all Buffy's fault. If she wasn't such a badass, I'd be quite miffed.
